The last time the Oakland Raiders employed an excellent quarterback was 2002. When Rich Gannon won the MVP award prior to losing the Super Bowl. In his third season, Derek Carr has electrified Raider Nation while taking the NFL by storm.

Carr’s seven fourth-quarter comebacks ranked second in 2016. As a result, winning the 2016 Castrol GTX Clutch Performer of the year seemed like a no-brainer. In crunch time, few are better than Carr. Correspondingly, that stats bear this out. With less than two minutes to go and trailing, he is 35/44 with 6 TD/1 INT. Like his boyhood idol, Kobe Bryant, Carr shoulders the load and wills his team to victory. Elevating himself into the conversation for league MVP, Carr and the Raiders suffered a crushing blow on Christmas Eve. In the ultimate show of respect, Carr finished tied for third on MVP ballots. Despite being the only player to receive votes without finishing the season on the field, the league recognizes Carr’s excellence.

Entering the off-season while recovering from surgery, the sky is the limit for Carr. Coming off an MVP like campaign, Carr isn’t close to his ceiling. In an interview with 95.7 The Game’s JT the Brick, NFL Network analyst David Carr said this about his brother.

“He’s an absolute dog. I mean he’s got a mentality like no other. . . It’s time for some more flexibility and let him just take ownership of this thing. I think you will see a lot more freedom from Derek at the line of scrimmage.”

RaiderNation would agree it’s time to see Carr be granted the “check with me” privileges at the line of scrimmage. Well on his way to greatness, Carr is the the quarterback to lead this team into the next decade or so. In reality, he’s ushered in the next great era of Raiders football.
