Beginning a new series this week, we will begin to take a look at the players who impact will be the most important on the Miami Dolphins season. Starting here at number ten, we will gradually progress our way to number one. For this series, we will take a look at the players who I feel will be important to any success the Dolphins have this season.

Starting off this series with new tight end Julius Thomas, the new addition to this Miami Dolphins offense will need to perform well for the Dolphins to succeed. Seeing as Miami utilized Dion Sims quite a bit last season, the same will likely be expected from Julius Thomas this season.

While the Dolphins have three wide receivers that are all extremely talented, head coach Adam Gase has shown a love for the tight end position last season. Utilizing it in many packages to provide an extra option for Ryan Tannehill, Adam Gase will likely expect Thomas to not only exceed last season’s production but also perform well on every play.

Considering Thomas’ poor play during his time in Jacksonville, this expectation could hurt in the long run. That said, Thomas had his best days during his time in Denver, where Adam Gase was a coach. If Gase believes Thomas will perform like he did during those days, then who am I to argue his addition to this team. That said, his performance this season will have an effect on the overall success of the Miami Dolphins offense.

DOLPHINS NEWS: Comparing current Miami players to past legends

With Ryan Tannehill coming off a major knee injury from last season, the biggest part of this situation could be the Dolphins need to protect him. Considering that Thomas has never been a good pass blocker, his success in the offense will need to move the ball in chunks and to also get the ball into the redzone and score.

If Thomas can do this, it likely takes the pressure off of Miami’s star receivers. However, should Thomas struggle like he did during his time in Jacksonville, it will likely mean a tough season ahead for the Dolphins offense. While the success of Thomas doesn’t breach the line of success and failure, his performance will go a long way to pushing Miami one direction or another.
