Italy bowed out of the 2017 IIHF World Championship with a thud on Monday, losing 2-0 to Denmark to finish winless in their seven games.

It was looking like the Italians would potentially pick up a point with the game goalless late in the third period, but the Danes broke through in the 58th minute to open the scoring.

When Italy pulled their goalie for one last rush, the unthinkable happened.

With just over a minute to play, Thomas Larkin sent a pass from the side boards to Alexander Egger, who was stationed in front of Italy’s empty net. As Egger received the puck, he stumbled and the puck then squirted into the empty net.

Brutal. Just brutal. Looks like we’re going to have to update our list.

The loss means that Italy will be relegated from the top division for the 2018 tournament along with Slovenia.
