Appearing on CBS This Morning, Gisele Bundchen appeared to divulge a bit too much information regarding Tom Brady. Brady’s wife stated that he has had a number of concussions in the past, including one last year.

The subject arose when Bundchen answered a question in regards to Brady’s longevity.

“You know, as a wife, I am a little bit — as you know it’s an aggressive sport,” she said. “Football, like he had a concussion last year. He has concussions pretty much — I mean we don’t talk about it, but he does have concussions. I don’t really think it is a healthy thing for your body to go through, through that kind of aggression all the time. That can’t be healthy. I am planning on him be healthy and do lots of things when we’re 100 I hope.”

Naturally, this drove a segment of football fans into a frenzy with accusations of the Patriots “cheating again”. A fruitless attempt to jump on the Patriots.

First of all, it’s entirely possible that Brady has suffered from a concussion or two in his career. However, if the team does not notice and the player does not inform the team about the concussion, then what is the issue?

Brady has spent a number of weeks on the injury report for various ailments throughout his career. Most notably an achy shoulder for the past 15 years. A concussion has never been one of the injures. The NFL has apparently looked into it and has determined that Brady never showed signs of a concussion in 2016.

“We have reviewed all reports relating to Tom Brady from the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants and certified athletic trainer spotters who worked at Patriots’ home and away 2016 season games as well as club injury reports that were sent to the league office. There are no records that indicate that Mr. Brady suffered a head injury or concussion, or exhibited or complained of concussion symptoms. Today we have been in contact with the NFLPA and will work together to gather more information from the club’s medical staff and Mr. Brady. The health and safety of our players is our foremost priority and we want to ensure that all our players have and continue to receive the best care possible.”

The NFL can have every protocol in place to spot and diagnose a concussion, but if a player chooses to hide the symptoms there is not much the league or team can do. Accusations of hiding injuries were met with a meager response from the NFL in recent months. Despite player safety being a number one priority.

In the end, this should be a non story. If anything, this again puts the effectiveness of the leagues concussion protocol into question. This is an issue the NFL would prefer go away quickly, hence their quick response.
