Former Jets LB David Harris signs with, yep, the Patriots

The New England Patriots aren’t just collecting talent from the Buffalo Bills anymore. They’re raiding former New York Jets too.

The Patriots signed veteran linebacker David Harris, who was cut by the Jets earlier this month as they purged the roster in what looks like an attempt to get the No. 1 pick of the draft. It’s a two-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Patriots already signed free agents cornerback Stephon Gilmore and running back Mike Gillislee from the Bills this offseason as they improve a roster that won last season’s Super Bowl.

Harris would be a key piece on just about any team, but he is mostly a luxury signing for the Patriots. Must be nice. Dont’a Hightower re-signed after testing free agency and he’s the Patriots’ top inside linebacker. Harris had 100 tackles from 2012-15, then 95 tackles last season. He’s 33 years old, but a perfect fit for the Patriots’ win-now approach in whatever role Bill Belichick has in mind for him.

The Patriots were the best team in the NFL last season by a wide margin, and they’ve added a lot of talent in the offseason. Twice this season the Jets will be able to see firsthand what a powerhouse the Patriots have built, which now includes their former middle linebacker.
