BYU will honor its most famous coach in 2017.

The team said Friday that players and coaches would wear a patch honoring longtime coach LaVell Edwards. The coaches will have the patch on their sleeves while the patch will be on the players’ chests. Here’s a closer look at it.

Edwards died in December at the age of 86. After serving as an assistant coach at BYU from 1962-71, Edwards became the head coach in 1972 and was the team’s coach until 2000. He amassed a record of 257-101-3 as the Cougars’ coach, including the 1984 national title. BYU went 13-0 in the WAC.

The school is now an independent and ESPN announced Friday that it had extended its contract with the school through 2019. ESPN televises all of BYU’s home games as well as its game Sep. 2 vs. LSU in Houston.

BYU opens the season a weekend earlier — and a weekend before everyone else in FBS — with a game against FCS school Portland State.
