The Baylor coaches landed commitment No. 5 for the 2018 recruiting class yesterday afternoon when Booker T. Washington wide receiver Tyquan Thornton announced his commitment to the Bears.

Things happned quickly with the 6-foot-3, 160-pound prospect, as the Baylor coaches offered him just a week ago.

"I first started talking with Coach (Fran) Brown and Coach (Evan) Cooper the morning they offered me just last week," Thornton said. "It was exciting to get the offer because Baylor is in the Big 12 and I knew it was my chance. They were the first school to offer, the first school to believe in me and that meant a lot.

"I called the coaches earlier today and told them I was ready to commit. They were very excited and want to continue adding talent from the Miami area. I want to help and become a recruiter myself, getting other guys to take a look at Baylor as well."

Although Thornton has never stepped foot on campus in Waco, the latest Baylor commitment simply felt comfortable in his decision to commit this week.

"It feels good to be committed," Thornton said. "I'm not going to get too comfortable though, I'm going to keep working and keep getting better. I have been to Texas before, just not to Waco itself. I talked things through with my Mom and Dad, and they both agreed it was a good decision. They are very excited for me.

"With Baylor, I just felt like I could open up to the coaches and I liked everything they were saying. We talked about how they could develop on the field, but also help develop me as a man during my time at Baylor."

Thornton does plan on making a trip to Baylor later this summer and is looking forward to seeing everything for himself.

"I don't have it setup yet, but we have talked about going out there later this summer," Thornton said. "I have looked up a few things about Baylor and the area of Waco, mostly about the program and some of the options academically. I'm excited to see everything during my visit and spend a lot of time around the coaching staff. I also plan on meeting with the track and field coaches, because the Baylor coaches told me that I could do both at the college level."

In fact, one of Thornton's main attributes on the field is his elite speed, and he is a standout in track and field as well.

"I have a track offer from LSU," Thornton said. "The coaches love my size and my speed, and believe that I can become a difference maker on the outside. I run the 100m, 200m and the relays."

Currently unrated, Thornton chose the Bears over an offer from Applachian State and a track offer from LSU.
