Netherlands vs England LIVE: Women’s Nations League result and final score as Lionesses concede late goal

England boss Sarina Wiegman’s return to the Netherlands ended in defeat as Dutch substitute Renate Jansen’s superb late strike saw the Lionesses beaten 2-1 in their second Nations League group game.

Jansen rifled past Mary Earps in the 90th minute in Utrecht after Lieke Martens’ contentious first-half opener, which would likely have been ruled out had VAR been in operation, was cancelled out by Alessia Russo’s 64th-minute finish.

Both teams hit the woodwork late in the first half, Rachel Daly for the visitors and Linda Beerensteyn for the hosts.

Netherlands goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar then made an excellent save to deny Lauren Hemp before Russo brought things level, but it was Jansen who had the final say on what proved a disappointing occasion for Wiegman in the battle between her current and former employers, both of whom she has guided to Euros glory and a World Cup final.

The result - only a third loss for England under Wiegman - leaves both the Lionesses and Andries Jonker’s Netherlands on three points in Group A1. Follow all the reaction from Netherlands vs England below and get the latest football odds and tips here.

Millie Bright speaking to ITV after the match:

“It’s hard because there were parts of the game we dominated. They were ruthless with their opportunities and we’ve gifted them two goals - it’s really disappointing on our behalf in games like this which really matter.

“We have to reflect but there’s still a lot to play for and the games will get harder. We have to get better as a team and develop.

“We just couldn’t find the way tonight.

“Periods of the game were really good, second half we were a different team, but when you give two goals like that it makes it really hard.”

FT - Netherlands 2-1 England

21:08 , Karl Matchett

Jansen hadn’t scored an international goal for over two years before that late winner and it’s only her fifth in 58 caps - what a time to hit such a perfect, and apparently rare, strike.

FT - Netherlands 2-1 England

Belgium leading Scotland 1-0 at present, into the second half.

That means it’s down to third as it stands for the Lionesses, but with back-to-back Belgium matches in late October there’s still much which can change in Group A1.

FT - Netherlands 2-1 England

20:56 , Karl Matchett

It’s all over! England were just a few minutes away from a really good away point, but one mis-step in midfield and a brilliant finish means they suffer defeat.

Netherlands move to three points in the group, level with the Lionesses after two games.

90+3’ - Netherlands 2-1 England

20:54 , Karl Matchett

Doesn’t look like it’ll happen for England. Millie Bright has gone forward to play in attack but there’s not much service coming. Netherlands just a minute away from a big three points. England rushing it and there’s a foul throw - just about likely to eat up the remaining seconds.

90’ - Netherlands 2-1 England

20:50 , Karl Matchett

Five minutes added on - can England find a way back into the match again?! They’ll have to be very quick.

GOAL! 89’ - Netherlands 2-1 England

20:50 , Karl Matchett

And that’s surely the winner! Possession lost in midfield, one pass through the centre finds Jansen, just on the pitch, racing in behind Greenwood and she absolutely leathers a first-time finish past Earps, in off the crossbar - no chance for the keeper and that’s 2-1 in the last minute!

86’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:49 , Karl Matchett

Jansen for Beerensteyn in another Dutch swap. Time rapidly running out for either nation to seize the three points; Netherlands are maybe just looking to push forward more now, with England more about the counter-attack in these closing stages.

82’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:40 , Karl Matchett

Stanway goes for goal from distance but she’s well off-target this time. Into the final ten minutes; will the Lionesses look to settle for the point and know they stay three clear of Netherlands, or do they want a perfect start in this international break and gamble a little more?

Teams play each other twice in the Nations League so there’s certainly no immediate need to go for broke for Wiegman’s side.

Goalscorer Russo is heading off, replaced by Lauren James.

78’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:37 , Karl Matchett

Pelova replaced by Kaptein as the Dutch turn to their bench. Kaptein is just 18 and winning her fourth cap. Lynn Wilms is also on as Andries Jonker looks to switch the approach.

74’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:33 , Karl Matchett

Lineth Beerensteyn takes on two with pace and power and cuts in on her right foot, but with Pelova screaming for the ball outside her she opts to shoot - and it’s weak, easily saved. Pelova furious.

Moments later a slower, more patient build-up ends in Martens having a side-footed effort on target, but it’s saved by Earps.

Here’s a view of that Russo equaliser:

70’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:29 , Karl Matchett

Zelem splits the midfield with a good pass from deep and England counter with three on two; Stanway eventually gets the shot away but slips as she does so and it’s a fairly routine save.

Jackie Groenen needs some treatment to what looks like a hamstring complaint initially, but she seems set to return to the pitch.

66’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:26 , Karl Matchett

Earps is called into action to save low to her left now as Netherlands get back on the offensive - fine stop, right against the post.

England have been excellent in the second half - they don’t want to sit off now that they are back on terms.

GOAL! 63’ - Netherlands 1-1 England

20:23 , Karl Matchett

And there’s the leveller!

Alessia Russo has hardly had a look-in for most of tonight but she gets a yard of space here and hooks the ball in brilliantly.

All that came from Chloe Kelly though, moving infield from the right and playing a lovely reverse pass for Toone, who eventually found Russo - it’s 1-1.

62’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

20:21 , Karl Matchett

Hemp this time causing all sorts of problems down the right, beating two and clipping a cross in - but as Toone and Kelly wait in the middle, Van Domselaar gets a touch on the ball and it deflects off Van de Donk and just wide.

The Dutch No10 immediately gives it away outside her own box again just after and Russo’s strike is deflected behind, amid apologies from Van de Donk.

England keeping their hosts entirely pinned in over the last ten minutes or so but they still trail by a goal.

58’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

20:17 , Karl Matchett

Wonder save!! Had to be 1-1 but Van Domselaar has made an unbelievable stop to deny Hemp!

Kelly does well down the right, beats her marker and crosses to the far post - Hemp is there sliding in, four yards out...and Van Domselaar spreads herself to make a fantastic reaction stop.

What a chance for the Lionesses to level. Hemp needs some treatment after colliding with the keeper in making that save.

54’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

20:13 , Karl Matchett

Half a chance for the Lionesses as Netherlands appeal that the ref is in the way - Hemp coming in at the far post meets Bronze’s cross, but she can’t get enough on the effort and it’s blocked away inside the six yard box.

Beerensteyn races away on the counter down the left channel again but the offside flag does go up this time, even as she beats Earps and hits the post.

50’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

20:11 , Karl Matchett

England trying to find a higher gear in this second half, a little more intensity to their play.

Nothing in the way of penalty box chances yet but they are having a higher starting position and more players looking to get forward earlier in build-up action.

Hemp down the left and Kelly down the right are trying to stretch play in particular.

46’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

20:05 , Karl Matchett

Back underway and a change at the interval for the Lionesses. Chloe Kelly on for Daly; Carter to the left side in a back four now and Kelly will be an extra attacker down the wing.

HT - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:58 , Karl Matchett

No VAR in the Nations League group but as mentioned, it certainly looked offside...judge for yourself.

Elsewhere:

Scotland have just got underway against Belgium in this group, Ireland are thrashing Hungary 4-0, Northern Ireland are goalless at the break against Albania, Denmark are beating Wales 2-0 in the first half.

Sweden beat Italy 1-0 earlier.

HT - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:48 , Karl Matchett

There’s the whistle and the hosts are ahead by a goal, though it really could have been two on the balance of play - or England could have been level with their response right at the end of the half.

Work to do in any case, for Sarina Wiegman and her staff.

44’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:47 , Karl Matchett

Two chances, two saves!

Almost an equaliser for England as they come alive, but Daphne van Domselaar is equal to both. First she gets down low to parry away a fierce strike from Hemp, played in down the left channel, then she’s up quickly and able to react to save Lucy Bronze’s low drive on the rebound.

Moments later it’s up the other end and almost 2-0!

Beerensteyn streaks away down the left channel, cuts inside and curls past Earps right-footed - but it bounces out off the crossbar!

Both teams suddenly coming to life in the closing stages of the half. We’ll have just one minute added on.

42’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:44 , Karl Matchett

Woodwork! Daly almost equalises out of nothing. A cross from the right isn’t dealt with, Toone keeps it alive and the ball is volleyed goalward by Daly - but onto the post instead of inside it. The closest England have come to a goal tonight, by a distance.

38’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:40 , Karl Matchett

Great skill from Pelova to evade Daly and burst past her down the right wing - Daly tugs her back, trips her up and is booked.

Netherlands well on top right now and deservedly a goal ahead.

Wiegman needs to get her team in at the break and reorganise matters somewhat - without conceding another, needless to say. Scotland did score right on the stroke of half-time last time out, but the Lionesses were two goals ahead at the time.

GOAL! 34’ - Netherlands 1-0 England

19:37 , Karl Matchett

It has been coming, but it’s controversial when it arrives!

Stanway is closed down just outside the box and the ricocheted ball flies straight to Van de Donk on the penalty spot; she looks offside but keeps her composure, tees up Lieke Martens and she curls a beauty over the last defender and into the top corner.

1-0 to Netherlands!

32’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:36 , Karl Matchett

Jess Carter’s turn to come across and make a good block interception now, as the Dutch threaten down their left.

Probably worth noting the hosts have five players in their squad who have over 20 international goals to their name - England have none at this stage.

27’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:34 , Karl Matchett

There’s definitely some work to do here from England to keep more possession and create anything of note in the attacking third, but we can certainly say this has been half an hour (almost) of decent defensive resilience and organisation.

Mary Earps has been called upon to make one save of real note but otherwise the back three, or five at times, have been excellent for the most part.

22’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:24 , Karl Matchett

Jill Roord drives forward from midfield and strikes one at goal from 20 yards - the Man City player doesn’t quite catch it right and although Earps fumbles the stop, it’s a routine one and easily recoverable at the second attempt.

Another WSL player, Pelova, then winds infield and curls straight at Earps with her left foot - no big threat on goal this time but more evidence of the hosts being on the front foot.

18’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:23 , Karl Matchett

Netherlands fairly bold in their approach play, lacking the final pass at present but certainly committing numbers into the box.

England by contrast slow to get players forward but comfortable in more probing build-up, particularly down the flanks. How much Daly and Bronze can get forward from wing-back will be crucial in their hopes of good delivery and - as shown against Scotland - offering an extra attacking threat too.

14’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:15 , Karl Matchett

Lineth Beerensteyn goes racing through the centre looking to get on the end of one of those long balls, but can’t reach this one. Mary Earps out to the edge of her area to claim it.

Van de Donk has a bit of a shout at the ref after she feels she’s fouled but the Dutch still have it and it’s play on.

Russo leads an England counter, but there’s nobody with her and the Lionesses are patient, going back to go forward again.

10’ - Netherlands 0-0 England

19:12 , Karl Matchett

Russo gets down the left flank for the first time and delivers a deep cross but England can’t get bodies forward to make the most of it. Netherlands happy to soak up a bit of pressure and then go direct when they need to.

6’- Netherlands 0-0 England

19:10 , Karl Matchett

Plenty of pressure on that Lionesses back three in the opening stages. Stanway having to get through plenty of work to protect them and try to start play from deep for England.

2’- Netherlands 0-0 England

19:08 , Karl Matchett

Underway and England struggling to keep possession in the opening stages. Netherlands are likely to be on the offensive after defeat last time out - they need a response.

What is the Women’s Nations League and how does Olympics qualification work?

18:56 , Karl Matchett

So, if Team GB head to the Olympics, Sarina Wiegman will be in charge. So...how do they get there?! By England reaching the final.

It’s just one part of a typically convoluted Nations League approach.

Luckily, we have a full explainer right here on what to watch for and what it all means:

England boss Sarina Wiegman is in line to manage Great Britain at next summer’s Olympics in Paris should qualification be secured, the Football Association has announced.

The women’s football tournament at the multi-sport showpiece will feature two European sides alongside hosts France, with those slots to be secured via the inaugural Women’s Nations League that is just about to get under way.

England have been nominated as the home nation with eligibility to obtain a spot for Great Britain, and thus also the employing and appointing body for Team GB staff.

First ever Lioness captain’s legacy lives on 50 years after maiden match

18:54 , Karl Matchett

It’s 50 years since England and Scotland contested the first ever official international women’s match in Great Britain.

An FA ban in December 1921 meant the women’s game was limited to public parks only, but in 1972 Sheila Parker led her side to a 3-2 victory in an Auld Enemy clash as the Lionesses’ first ever captain.

In 2022, several members of the trailblazing England side who took to the field that day were finally awarded their official caps when they met with the current squad before a friendly against the US.

Sheila Parker was inducted into the England Football Hall of Fame in 2013, and has previously spoken about her playing days and delight at the success of the current team - and her granddaughter, now also a player, spoke to the Independent in an exclusive interview recently.

Netherlands vs England - latest updates

Last time out, England beat Scotland 2-1 to start the Nations League with victory and manager Sarina Wiegman hailed a “very important” three points.

Just over a month since their World Cup final loss to Spain, the Lionesses picked up an inaugural win in the competition.

Former Black Cat Lucy Bronze opened the scoring at the Stadium of Light before Lauren Hemp doubled the lead and Kirsty Hanson pulled one back – all in the six minutes before the break.

The visitors had opportunities to level in the second half, with Hanson and Christy Grimshaw having the pick of the chances, but were unable to capitalise and Wiegman was pleased her side were able to take the win – which left them alongside Belgium at the top of Group A1 after the latter’s surprise win over the Netherlands.

Netherlands vs England - latest updates

England boss Sarina Wiegman admits it will be “very special” when her side take on her native Netherlands in Tuesday’s Nations League contest in Utrecht.

Wiegman played for the Dutch national team before overseeing their Euro 2017 win on home soil and finishing as runners-up at the 2019 World Cup in France.

The 53-year-old, who has subsequently matched those managerial achievements with England, told a press conference that being back in her home country with the Lionesses was “very nice, a little bit strange too – of course I have some memories here”.

She added: “I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. It’s just very special to be here and to play the opponents.

“Of course we know each other really well, I know the staff, most of the staff didn’t change that much, or the players. Lots of people will be in the stands that I know.”

Good evening and welcome to the Independent’s coverage of the Women’s Nations League, this is matchday two and the Lionesses are in action once more - this time facing Netherlands.

England face the Netherlands in their second match of the Women’s Nations League campaign tonight in Utrecht.

The Lionesses began their participation in the inaugural competition with a 2-1 win against Scotland last Friday. The Netherlands found themselves on the wrong side of the same scoreline against Belgium, also last Friday, and will be looking to make a response.

The last time England faced head coach Sarina Wiegman’s former side and home nation was in June 2022 in a warm-up fixture before the Euros. England won 5-1 with goals from Lucy Bronze, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and two from Beth Mead.

England have only lost twice in their past 14 matches against the Netherlands, once in 2007, and at the Euro 2017 semi-finals when Wiegman was the Dutch team’s manager.
