Nashville Predators blow multiple leads in loss to Arizona Coyotes

Saturday evening began with a video celebration of Nashville Predators center Ryan O’Reilly, who played his 1,000th regular-season game on Halloween against the Vancouver Canucks.

Teammates past and present saluted him, along with his parents and brother. His teammates gifted him a Rolex. He was presented a silver hockey stick. The crowd cheered loudly as he stood in a corner of the ice with his wife and three children.

Then all hell broke loose when their game against the Arizona Coyotes began.

It didn’t end until the Coyotes prevailed 7-5 in Nashville’s return from a season-long five-game road trip that saw them go 1-4.

Kiefer Sherwood put the Predators up 1-0 on a breakaway with 14:47 left in the first period, his fourth goal of the season.

Then O’Reilly was shown on the big screen singing Chris Stapleton’s hit song “Tennessee Whiskey."

Then Filip Forberg’s scored his fifth of the season with 12:49 left and the Predators were off and running — or so they thought.

Two quick Coyotes goals tied the score at 2-all before Dante Fabbro’s second goal of the season with 3:02 left in the first gave the Predators the lead back.

O’Reilly got in on the goal-scoring action when he put the Predators ahead 4-2 on a power play with 16:31 left in the second period, his eighth of the season.

But Arizona struck back with a power-play goal of its own a few minutes later. They scored two more goals and took a 5-4 lead into the third period.

Forsberg struck again with 6:03 left in the third when he deflected Gustav Nyquist’s shot past former Predators goalie Connor Ingram to tie the score 5-5. But less than three minutes later Sean Durzi’s power-play goal put the visitors back ahead 6-5.

An empty-net goal with 1:27 remaining sealed the victory for the Coyotes.

Predators defenseman Ryan McDonagh missed his fourth consecutive game because of a lower-body injury. Center Cody Glass, who had missed seven in a row because of a lower-body ailment, returned, playing 14 minutes.

The Predators (5-9-0) began the day in last place in the Central Division. The Coyotes (7-6-1) were in fifth place.
