Nashville Predators top Golden Knights for second straight win

he Nashville Predators looked to gain ground in the Western Conference wild-card race Tuesday night in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights.

The game was the second of a five-game road trip that also will take the team to Los Angeles, San Jose and Anaheim.

The result was a 5-3 victory for the Predators, who pulled into a tied for a playoff spot.

Luke Evangelista’s 11th goal of the season, with 14:25 left in the first period, gave the Predators an early lead. It was the second game in a row he’s scored.

Cody Glass, the first draft pick in Vegas history, gave the Predators a 2-1 lead with 51.3 seconds left in the first. Roman Josi picked up his 41st assist of the season on Glass’ second goal and first since Dec. 19 and came after Alex Pietrangelo’s third goal of the season with 4:51 left in the first tied the score 1-1.

Nashville is coming off a 5-2 victory Saturday against the St. Louis Blues. The team flew back home after that game rather than going to Vegas early and attending a U2 concert as had been planned. The trip was nixed by general manager Barry Trotz and head coach Andrew Brunette after the Predators struggled coming out of the All-Star break.

Tommy Novak and Cole Smith goals gave the Predators a 4-1 lead William Karlsson’s power play goal cut that deficit in half.

Michael Amadio’s goal with 2:59 left in regulation pulled the Knights within one.

Gustav Nyquist’s empty-net goal with 1:49 left gave the Predators a two-goal lead. It was his 13th goal of the season.

Backup goalie Kevin Lankinen started for the Predators and made 37 saves

The Predators (29-25-2) began Tuesday two points out of a wild-card spot and had lost seven of their last nine games.

The Knights (32-18-6) is in second place in the Pacific Division.

William Karlsson’s power-play goal 47 seconds into the third cut the Golden Knights’ deficit to two. It was his 18th goal of the season.

Cole Smith’s tip-in goal, his seventh score of the season, put the Predators ahead by three with 4:02 left in the second. Kiefer Sherwood and Michael McCarron had assists.

Tommy Novak’s goal just after a Predators’ power play concluded gave the visitors a two-goal lead. It was his 12th goal of the season. Ryan McDongah and Alexandre Carrier earned assists on the score.
