Nashville Predators final score, highlights and recap vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Nashville Predators took one too many penalties in Tuesday's 5-3 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning in Andrew Brunette's coaching debut.

Tampa Bay scored four third-period goals, two on the power play and one on a penalty shot. The last one, with 1.2 seconds remaining, was scored on an empty net as the Predators pushed for the game-tying goal.

Ryan O'Reilly, Juuso Parssinen and Tommy Novak had the Predators goals, while Filip Forsberg had two assists. Juuse Saros stopped 29 of 33 shots.

Nikita Kucherov and Nick Paul each had two goals for the Lightning.

Third period

FINAL: Lightning 5, Predators 3

Nikita Kucherov scores an empty-net goal with 1.2 seconds left to put this one away.

Predators had plenty of offensive zone possession in the final two minutes at 6-on-5, but couldn't bury a chance.

Those third-period penalties were not helpful, especially against the Lightning power play.

Next game up: Thursday, and the home opener against Seattle. Puck drop set for 7 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena.

Nick Paul's second power play goal puts Tampa Bay ahead

Yes, there are more goals. Jeremy Lauzon takes a penalty, and the Lightning takes advantage on the power play. Nick Paul buries a rebound past Saros. He was alone in front of Saros, and there was nothing for the Predators goaltender to do there.

All three Lightning third period goals have come on either the power play or on a penalty shot.

Tommy Novak power play goal ties game at 3-3

Tommy Novak, playing to the right of Johansson, skates past Nick Paul and beats the Lightning goaltender on the short side for the power play goal.

The Predators power play has been better throughout the game, and Novak earned that one with a nice wrist shot.

Brandon Hagel scores on penalty shot to put Tampa back in front

42 seconds after the game-tying goal, Luke Schenn brought down Brandon Hagel as Hagel was clear on net in front of Saros. The officials award Hagel a penalty shot.

Hagel buries his first career penalty shot past Saros to give the Lightning the lead. Tampa Bay 3, Nashville 2

The Lightning respond, turning two Predators penalties into goals in the third after falling behind. The intensity in this game has turned up.

Nick Paul buries power play goal on scramble to tie the game

Roman Josi takes a penalty for the second time in the game, this time for interference. Tampa Bay goes to work, and Nick Paul flies into a scramble in front of net to finish as Saros is laid out trying to stop the puck.

Two minutes after the Parssinen go-ahead goal, this one is tied. Tampa Bay 2, Nashville 2

Juuso Parssinen scores go-ahead goal 14 seconds into the third

Off the third period faceoff, the Predators win the puck and work into the Lightning defensive zone. Filip Forsberg finds Juuso Parssinen behind the Lightning defense, and Parssinen buries the chance.

Second period

Ryan O'Reilly tip-in goal ties the game

Filip Forsberg and Ryan O'Reilly turn a two-on-one into the first goal of the season for the Predators.

After the Predators won the puck on the defensive end, Forsberg worked around Victor Hedman with a toe drag, and found O'Reilly crashing the net for the goal.

The Preds need those two to produce this season, and they do so in the second period of the opener.

Cody Glass leaves game after taking shot off the helmet

Predators forward Cody Glass left the ice after taking a puck off the helmet in the second period.

Glass was on the ice for the Predators' third power-play opportunity of the game. With 5:52 left in the second period, a Tyson Barrie one-timer shot was not cleanly hit, and the puck hit off of Glass' helmet.

Glass stayed on the ice for a few moments as a Predators staff member came on to check on him. He got on his feet and left the ice in some discomfort. Glass went straight to the locker room area.

Nashville power play better, but Lightning still lead 1-0

The Predators are credited with three shots on goal on their second power play but can't get one past Jonas Johansson. The best chance was a Roman Josi one-timer from the slot that Johansson fought off, and there was also a testy scramble in front of the net seconds later.

Before that Nashville PP, the play resembled a preseason game. A Predators goal could change that.

First period

Lightning up 1-0 after one period

Tampa takes a 1-0 lead into the first intermission and has been by far the better team.

Shots are 13-2 to the Lightning. Nashville had an earlier power play with no shots on goal. Nowhere to go but up for the visitors.

Tampa Bay will have 90 seconds on the power play to start the second period as Roman Josi serves a minor penalty for slashing.

Nikita Kucherov puts Lightning on the board

Lightning sniper Nikita Kucherov has been one of the best goalscorers in the league over the last several season, and he shows why on the game's opening goal.

Kucherov and the Lightning get settled into the Nashville zone, and with Steven Stamkos providing traffic in front of Juuse Saros, Kucherov fires a one-timer into the net from the high slot. As Ryan Callahan and Kevin Weekes mentioned on the ESPN broadcast, it too closely resembled a power play sequence. Goal comes at 9:48 of the first period.
