MOUNTAINEER ROUNDUP: Lady Mountaineer softball opens season with ranked win

Feb. 12—The Lady Mountaineers started off their spring season with a big statement.

Eastern Oklahoma State College softball highlighted a slate of Mountaineer athletics last week, earning a ranked win to open the 2024 season.

The Lady Mountaineers faced off against DII-No. 8 Johnson County Community College, earning the 6-5 win at the THF Collegiate Winter Blast and marking back-to-back seasons where the program opened with a ranked win.

Johnson County earned the first score in the top of the second inning, but the Lady Mountaineers struck right back in the bottom frame with three runs to push into the lead. Back-and-forth both teams traded blows, finding themselves tied after the fifth inning at 5-5.

That's when the Lady Mountaineers struck in their next at-bat — using the go-ahead run to seal away the win.

Geralyn Haney, Jacey Browne, Braelyn Blasengame, and Keeley Johnson came up big for EOSC at the plate, combining for four hits, four RBIs, seven walks and a hit-by-pitch to ignite the Big Blue offense.

Makenzie Martin got the win in the circle, throwing eight strikeouts in seven innings and allowing only two earned runs.

Eastern kept the momentum going into the next game of the double-header against Coffeyville Community College, with Chloe Brown striking out seven as she threw a perfect five-inning game.
