MLB rumors, injuries and news roundup for September 8

Another day of baseball is in the books and there are officially fewer than three weeks left in the 2014 regular season. It flies by, doesn't it? Here is a recap of Monday's news from around the league.

RUMORS & TRANSACTIONS

Diamondbacks: Will interview Red Sox assistant GM Allard Baird and Dodgers assistant GM De Jon Watson for their vacant GM position. (Jon Heyman)

INJURY UPDATES

Angels: OF Josh Hamilton missed his fourth straight game with a shoulder injury.

Athletics: LHP Sean Doolittle (intercostal) threw 20 pitches off the mound on Monday and a return this week is possible (San Francisco Chronicle) ... C John Jaso (concussion) will see the doctor on Wednesday and hopes to be cleared to return to action. (MLB.com)

Braves: C Evan Gattis is day-to-day with strep throat. (MLB.com)

Cubs: 1B Anthony Rizzo (back) took swings on Monday and thinks he'll be able to return as soon as this weekend. (Chicago Tribune)

Mariners: OF Dustin Ackley (ankle) was set to have an MRI on Monday. (MLB.com)

Marlins: RHP Henderson Alvarez (oblique) will rejoin the rotation on Friday. (Sun Sentinel)

Mets: 2B Daniel Murphy (calf) ran, took ground balls and hit on Monday. He could be activated off the disabled list as soon as Tuesday. (Newsday)

Nationals: The chances of 3B Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) returning for the final week of the regular season "appear slim." (Nats Insider)

Orioles: SS J.J. Hardy will miss the team's series with the Red Sox due to a lingering back problem.

Phillies: SS Jimmy Rollins left Monday's game with a hamstring strain and expects to miss 7-10 days. (Philadelphia Daily News)

Reds: RHP Dylan Axelrod left Monday's game after seven pitches with an oblique strain, the team announced.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy has been diagnosed with rotator cuff inflammation. An MRI showed no structural damage in his shoulder, the team announced ... RHP Greg Holland (triceps) was not available Monday but manager Ned Yost expects him to be available Tuesday. (Fox Sports)

Tigers: 3B Miguel Cabrera has a bone spur in his ankle and may need offseason surgery ... RHP Anibal Sanchez (pectoral) and RHP Joakim Soria (oblique) faced hitters on Sunday and Monday, respectively. Sanchez is still a few weeks away but Soria could return this week.

MISCELLANY

MLB: The 2015 regular season schedule was released. The season will start a week later than usual and the World Series could carry over into November.

Marlins: OF Giancarlo Stanton hit his career high-tying 37th home run on Monday night. It was also his 154th career homer, tying Dan Uggla's franchise record.

Red Sox: DH David Ortiz said he will not have a farewell tour when he is ready to retire.
