MLB notebook: Another setback for Yankees OF Ellsbury

The New York Yankees said Jacoby Ellsbury's recovery from a right oblique injury has hit a snag after the outfielder suffered a hip injury during his rehab.

"He's kind of been shut down here for a couple days," manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday. "There's no games down in the minor leagues right now for a couple days. Hopefully we can get that out of there and kind of roll from there."

Ellsbury, 34, has been plagued by injuries the past few seasons and is slated to be a backup this season.

Last season, Ellsbury batted .264 with seven homers, 39 RBIs and 22 steals in 112 games. In four seasons with New York, he is batting .264 with 39 homers, 198 RBIs and 102 steals.

--The Yankees acquired outfielder Trayce Thompson off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Thompson was designated for assignment by the Dodgers last week. He has a .233 average with 19 homers and 50 RBIs in 151 major league games with the Chicago White Sox (2015) and Dodgers (2016-17).

The Yankees also said outfielder Aaron Hicks is making progress from the right intercostal strain he suffered on Opening Day on March 29 and could be activated from the disabled list early next week.

--The Seattle Mariners placed slugger Nelson Cruz on the disabled list retroactive to Sunday due to the sprained right ankle he suffered on Saturday.

Cruz was injured when he slipped on the steps as he returned to the dugout at Safeco Field after hitting a homer in the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants.

Infielder Taylor Motter was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Cruz on the 25-man roster. Motter batted .198 with seven homers and 26 RBIs in 92 games with the Mariners last season.

--St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Jedd Gyorko was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a right hamstring injury.

Gyorko, 29, was injured while running the bases during Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cardinals recalled outfielder Harrison Bader from Triple-A Memphis. Bader, 23, batted .313 during a strong spring. He played in 32 games with the Cardinals last season and hit .235 with three homers and 10 RBIs.

--The New York Mets placed relief pitcher Anthony Swarzak on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.

The 32-year-old right-hander left the game Saturday against St. Louis after feeling pain in his left side. According to one report, Swarzak said he had never felt pain in that area before.

To fill his roster spot, the Mets are calling up pitcher Hansel Robles. The 27-year-old Robles was 7-5 with a 4.92 ERA in 46 games out of the bullpen last season.

--The Los Angeles Angels placed right-hander Matt Shoemaker on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. The move was retroactive to Sunday.

Shoemaker, 30, pitched Saturday against the Oakland Athletics and gave up three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He picked up the victory in the 8-3 decision.

The Angels recalled right-hander Parker Bridwell from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the roster spot. Bridwell went 10-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts) last season.
