Player Notes
Jedd Gyorko remained cold with the bat, going 0-for-3, but walked and stole his first base of the season as the Padres lost to the Brewers on Wednesday.

Advice: Gyorko has exactly one hit over his last seven games spanning 24 plate appearances. The Padres' second baseman has struggled mightily with the bat, carrying a meager .442 OPS in 84 trips to the plate. It's tough to watch, but the Padres have to watch their young second baseman hit his way out of his funk after signing him to a five year, $35.5 million extension last week.

Jedd Gyorko is not in the Padres' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's just a routine day of rest. Alexi Amarista is at second base Sunday in Gyorko's place. Yonder Alonso is also getting a breather, with Tommy Medica covering first base.

Dropped to the sixth spot in the lineup, Jedd Gyorko went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Saturday against the Giants.

Advice: Gyorko opened the season batting third and fourth, but he's hitting just .148 in 18 games, necessitating the drop. He's 2-for-18 since landing his five-year, $35 million deal on April 14.

Padres signed 2B Jedd Gyorko to a five-year contract extension with a club option for 2020.

Advice: The extension will begin in 2015 and is worth a total of $35 million guaranteed. Gyorko will earn $2 million next season, $4 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017, $9 million in 2018, and $9 million in 2019. The option is worth $13 million and carries a $1 million buyout. The Padres bought out all of his arbitration seasons and one year of free agency in the deal. Apparently the Padres saw enough in his rookie season to want to make a long-term commitment.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Padres have reached a multi-year contract extension with Jedd Gyorko.

Advice: ESPN's Keith Law says it's a six-year deal with a seventh-year option, and Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish pegs the total guaranteed value at $35 million. The option for 2020, according to Cotillo, is worth $13 million. Gyorko wasn't going to be arbitration-eligible until after the 2015 campaign, so this extension buys out all three of his arbitration seasons and one year of free agency. The 25-year-old second baseman batted .249/.301/.444 with 23 home runs and 63 RBI in 125 games last summer as a rookie.
