Player Notes
Nelson Cruz said Friday that while his agent and the Orioles have had extension talks after the All-Star break, they haven't been serious.

Advice: CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier Friday that the two sides were both interested in a long-term deal, but it doesn't sound terribly likely that anything will get done before the end of the season. Cruz leads all of baseball with 34 homers this season after having to settle for a one-year, $8 million deal at the beginning of spring training.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that both the Orioles and Nelson Cruz "have expressed an interest" in a contract extension.

Advice: Heyman cautions that "there's no definitive immediate word of any early negotiations," but it does appear the two sides are interested "in continuing the marriage, if possible." The report also adds that the O's will extend Cruz a qualifying offer this offseason if they're unable to lock him up on a long-term deal. After having to settle for a one-year, $8 million deal in late February, Cruz has gone on to hit a career-high 34 homers so far for Baltimore, a total that leads all of baseball.

Nelson Cruz finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double as the Orioles topped the Rays on Tuesday.

Advice: Cruz hadn't enjoyed a multi-hit game since August 11, over two weeks ago. His seventh-inning RBI double gave the O's an insurance run, but proved to be ultimately unnecessary. The soon-to-be free agent leads baseball with 34 home runs and has a nice .256/.325/.512 slash line with 88 RBI to boot.

Nelson Cruz set a new career high with his 34th homer in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Advice: The line-drive blast to left field just barely found its way into the basket at Wrigley Field. Unfortunately for the Orioles, it represented their lone run and one of just five hits (all the rest were singles) on the day. Cruz is sporting a .258/.326/.520 batting line for the season and has driven in 87 runs.
