Mizzou women's basketball to play in the 2023 Daytona Beach Classic on Thanksgiving weekend
The Missouri women's basketball team has signed a contract to play in a two-day basketball event the weekend of the 2023 Thanksgiving holiday.
MU will play in the Coast 2 Coast 2023 Daytona Beach Classic on Nov. 24 and 25, according to a signed event contract obtained with an open records request.
Missouri will pay $30,000 to play in the event, according to the contract. It was signed by MU on April 11, 2023.
In the contract, it states MU will play two counting Division I games.
The 2023 Daytona Beach Classic is run by the same individual who directed the West Palm Invitational that Missouri played in during the 2017-18 season. During the 2017 West Palm Invitational, the Tigers beat Indiana and Xavier.
According to a MU women's basketball spokesperson, this individual runs different events during different years. At this time, the 2023 Daytona Beach Classic does not have plans to be a recurring event. It's currently a one-time event.
Should MU decide it does not want to participate in the 2023 Daytona Beach Classic, MU will owe Coast 2 Coast a $15,000 cancelation fee. The cancelation fee would not apply if Coast 2 Coast were to cancel the event, or if an "act of God" were to force cancelation on Missouri's end. Missouri will be responsible for travel costs.
The other participating teams in the 2023 Daytona Beach Classic have yet to be announced. Last season, Missouri competed in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship. The Tigers played two ACC teams: Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.
MU defeated Wake Forest 69-47 before falling to eventual Final Four participant Virginia Tech 73-57.
