Mississippi State basketball lands commitment from RJ Melendez, Georgia transfer guard

STARKVILLE — Former Georgia guard RJ Melendez has committed to Mississippi State basketball, he announced via social media Saturday. He's the third transfer guard to commit to MSU this offseason and the fourth player overall.

Melendez (6-foot-7) spent last season with UGA, where he averaged 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. His top performance came at Florida on Jan. 27 when he scored 35 points.

He came to Georgia after two seasons at Illinois. With the Illini, he averaged 5.1 points and 2.8 rebounds across 54 games and 19 starts.

Coach Chris Jans is entering his third season at MSU after leading the Bulldogs to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his first two campaigns. His first portal commitment this offseason was former Penn State guard Kanye Clary, who announced his move on March 29.

The Bulldogs landed former Miami center Michael Nwoko on April 17 before getting a commitment from former Boston College guard Claudell Harris on April 20.
