Patrick Beverley picks up technical foul just 60 seconds into Game 2 vs. Grizzlies

Patrick Beverley wasted no time getting into foul trouble on Tuesday night.

The Minnesota Timberwolves guard was assessed a technical foul just 60 seconds into their 124-96 loss in Game 2 of their opening-round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Beverley, one minute into the game at FedExForum, tried to swipe the ball away from Grizzlies star Ja Morant near the top of the key. Instead of hitting the ball, however, Beverley made near-direct contact with Morant’s face — which sent Morant down to the floor.

Though it was called a foul in the moment, a review of the play turned that into a technical foul and sent Desmond Bane to the free-throw line. Bane then hit his free shot, and tied the game at 1-1.

That start, though there was still plenty of time for Beverley to turn things around, certainly wasn't what the Timberwolves had hoped for.

The rest of the first quarter wasn't much better foul-wise. Both teams combined to shoot 33 free throws in the opening 12 minutes of the game, which tied for the most in any first quarter of any game in 25 years, per ESPN.

That one-point game after the first quarter didn't last long. The Grizzlies held Minnesota to just 17 points in the second quarter and took an 11-point lead at the break, and then flew ahead on a 22-6 run to open the third — which broke the game wide open. From there, they simply cruised to the 28-point win, which evened the series 1-1 before it heads back to Minneapolis.

Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 20 points in the loss, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 15 points with 11 rebounds. Beverley finished with six points and shot just 1-of-6 from the field.

Ja Morant led Memphis and was just a single rebound shy of a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. each added 16 points, and the Grizzlies bench dropped a combined 60 points with four players scoring in double figures.

Game 3 is Thursday in Minneapolis.
