Milligan University track athlete dies, 4 others injured after hit-and-run in Virginia

A Milligan University runner died and four others were injured in a hit-and-run incident near Williamsburg, Virginia, where they were set to compete in a meet this weekend.

Five members of Milligan’s track and field team were out running Thursday night around 6 when police said they were hit by a red sedan, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

The sedan, police said, fled the scene. The driver was later arrested after he crashed into a median nearby. Specifics surrounding the driver or what led to the accident are unknown, and an investigation is underway.

All five students were taken to a local hospital.

Sophomore Eli Cramer died due to his injuries at the hospital, the school said in a post. He was 20.

Seniors Alex Mortimer and Eli Baldy were injured, too, though Baldy was treated and released. Police said one other student suffered severe injuries, per the report.

Mortimer spoke in a video on the university’s Facebook page following surgery Thursday night, and said he broke his leg.

Milligan, which is located near Johnson City, Tennessee, was in town for the Colonial Relays this weekend. More than 40 schools are scheduled to compete in the event, which is hosted by William & Mary.
