Miller, Dipzinski latest Gaylord athletes to choose college destination

GAYLORD ― There is no questioning that the Classes of 2023 and 2024 at Gaylord High School are full of talented athletes.

That fact continues to be confirmed as time goes on as more Blue Devil athletes make their future college and athletic plans official. And, as the school year enters the final stretch, two more athletes are joining their many classmates as verbally-committed student-athletes.

Senior Maddi Dipzinski and junior Braleigh Miller were the most recent GHS athletes to make their plans official, with Dipzinski committing to Alpena Community College to play volleyball and Miller committing to Ferris State's softball team.

Dipzinski made her commitment official on Wednesday, April 19, signing her letter of intent to play at ACC in a ceremony in the GHS Career Education Room.

The Blue Devils setter this past fall, Dipzinski was a consistent passer for head coach Brittany Cornish, leading the team in assists nearly every game. She finished atop the team leaders in assists with 541 for the season along with 57 kills and 162 digs.

Meanwhile, Miller became the fifth member of the talented GHS softball team to make her college plans official, announcing her commitment to Ferris State on her Instagram over the weekend.

Miller missed most of the 2022 season with an injury, but has been on a tear to start the 2023 season as the Blue Devils' center fielder and leadoff hitter. She currently boasts a .583 batting average with four doubles, two triples, 14 runs scored, seven runs batted in and six stolen bases.

She is the second Gaylord player to commit to FSU, joining senior Alexis Kozlowski who committed to the Bulldogs back in February.

Ferris State is coached by Jake Schumann, a former coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas A&M Kingsville and Florida International. In his last run as a head coach, Schumann had built NCAA Division I FIU into a successful program, leading the Panthers to an 88-75 overall record in three seasons.

He also spent time as an assistant coach for Iowa and Ole Miss as well in the National Fastpitch League for the USSSA Pride.

Other softball players committed to play in college include juniors Jayden Jones (Virginia Tech), Alexis Shepherd (Toledo) and Taylor Moeggenberg (Cornerstone).
