Michigan State parts ways with football signee Steffan Johnson after his arrest in Florida

Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker parted ways with an incoming signee after his arrest this week.

The school said in a statement Friday afternoon that Tucker has told cornerback Steffan Johnson he "will not be a member of the Spartan program.” The 18-year-old was charged with extortion and directing or promoting sexual performance by a child in North Port, Florida, according to a police report obtained by the Free Press on Thursday afternoon.

Johnson on Wednesday night was accused of threatening a juvenile female with posting sexual videos of the alleged victim on social media. The video allegedly was recorded when the victim was 15 and Johnson was 17, according to police, and Johnson is alleged to have “threatened to injure the reputation” of the victim.

Part of Tucker’s first recruiting class, Johnson signed with Michigan State in December and said via social media on April 19 that he planned to visit East Lansing attend the Spartans’ final spring practice, which was Saturday, before he is scheduled to arrive with the rest of his classmates for summer semester.

The three-star recruit according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings is listed at 6-2, 185 pounds in the police report.
