Michigan State athletics sees COVID-19 spike as 15 athletes, 2 staffers test positive

Positive COVID-19 cases within Michigan State’s sports programs are on the rise again.

MSU had 15 positive test results among 92 athletes and two of five staff members infected with the novel coronavirus, according to numbers released Friday by the athletic department. Men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo revealed he tested positive Monday.

The spike in COVID cases, from testing from Nov. 6 through Wednesday, comes after just four of 60 Spartan athletes and none of 11 staff members tested positive last week. Two weeks ago, there were no cases among athletes and only one positive case among staff members among 48 total tests.

MSU has conducted at least 3,016 COVID-19 clinical PCR tests on athletes and staff members since June. There have been 163 positive results among at least 2,560 tests on Spartan athletes and 11 COVID cases among more than 456 tests among staff members.

Individuals who tested positive and remain in isolation will undergo daily check-ins with athletic training staff. Additional services will be provided as directed by the medical and administrative staffs, and further testing and physician follow-up will be required prior to returning to any level of workouts.
