Michigan assistant Mike Hart 'trending in a positive direction' after medical emergency

Michigan assistant coach Mike Hart is back home in Ann Arbor after a health scare on Saturday.

Hart, UM’s running backs coach, reportedly suffered a seizure on the sideline during Michigan’s road game against Indiana. Hart was carted off the field on a stretcher during the first quarter, leaving many Michigan players visibly emotional.

On Monday, Hart put out a statement with an encouraging update. He has returned to Ann Arbor and his condition is “trending in a positive direction.”

“I look forward to rejoining our team soon,” Hart said.

Hart was transported to a local hospital and held overnight for observation, but Michigan said he was in stable condition as of Saturday evening. Jim Harbaugh characterized the incident as a “medical emergency” but did not offer specifics on what exactly transpired with Hart.

“Mike is a strong guy and abundant prayers go his way. It really puts things in perspective,” Harbaugh said Saturday. “In the moment, everybody’s thoughts were with Mike. Mine were and everyone around us was to get him the care that he needed. The most important thing is his health at that point in time.”

Harbaugh said Saturday that he was able to share with his team at halftime that Hart was in stable condition.

Hart, 36, is a former Michigan running back who is in his second season on Harbaugh’s staff. He previously spent four seasons on the staff at Indiana before returning to his alma mater. Hart is the all-time rushing leader in Michigan history.

Michigan won Saturday’s game 31-10 to improve to 6-0 on the year. The Wolverines, ranked No. 5 in the country, are set to host No. 10 Penn State on Saturday. It’s unclear if Hart will be able to rejoin the team for this weekend’s game.
