MetroWest Fantastic Five athletes from the opening weekend of the 2024 spring season

No tricks here, just big stat lines.

The inaugural MetroWest Daily News Fantastic Five of the spring 2024 season leans heavily on boys volleyball and lacrosse performances because the rain wiped out nearly every baseball and softball matchup last week.

These Fantastic Five players led their teams to season-opening victories or stood tall in the face of challenging competition.

FINN BELL, Wayland boys volleyball

He hammered down 29 kills with eight digs in a 3-1 win over Lincoln-Sudbury on Thursday. Joey Burke distributed 47 assists with 10 digs and four blocks, and Joe Kelly put up a double-double with 21 kills, 13 digs three blocks and two aces for the Wayland Warriors (1-0, 1-0 Dual County League). Wayland took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-21 before L-S staved off elimination 25-22. Wayland ended the match 25-19 in the fourth.

ANNA MAGENNIS, Ashland girls lacrosse

She scored two goals with two assists in a 20-7 loss against Medway on Thursday. Julia Schreiber contributed two goals as well for the Clockers (0-1, 0-1 TVL). Ashalnd's Morgan Dubanowitz added two assists, while Paige Tripp scored a goal with an assist. Clockers goalie Alannah Duffy stopped 12 shots.

OLIVIA MELANSON, Medway girls lacrosse

She scored five goals with two assists and won seven draw controls in an 18-6 victory over Bellingham on Thursday. Ella Taylor contributed a hat trick with two assists for Medway (1-0, 1-0 TVL). Luci Walden scored three times for the Blackhawks (0-1) and caused two turnovers.

GAVIN SHIPOS, Medway boys lacrosse

He contributed contributed seven points in a 13-6 win over Bellingham on Thursday. Shipos scored four goals and three assists for the Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 TVL). Medway's Drew McCarthy went 14-of-23 on face offs

LILY VILLAFLOR, Westborough girls lacrosse

She earned her 200th career draw control in a 17-9 road win over Oakmont on Saturday. Villaflor pulled in seven draw controls and was one of four Rangers with a hat trick. Kate Sams, Mackenzie Gage (assist) and Mae Abraham also scored three goals each. Taylor Payne contributed two goals and an assist for Westborough (2-0).

WESTBOROUGH 16, Bromfield 3: Lily Villaflor poured in four goals for the Rangers (1-0) on Thursday. Cayla Ehrlich added a hat trick, while Katherine Sams showed her versatility with two goals, two assists and six draw controls.

WORCESTER 9, Hopedale 4: Emily Frohn found the net twice for the Blue Raiders (0-1) on Thursday.

NASHOBA 13, Tri-County 3: Gabrielle Dergham scored twice for the Cougars (0-1) on Friday.

Boys volleyball

'We play for SJ7 and her family': D-S girls lacrosse honors Sadie Mauro with victory

MARLBOROUGH 3, Assabet Valley 0: Declan McCarthy led the Panthers (1-0) with six aces in a 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 victory Friday.

FITCHBURG 3, Assabet Valley 0: David Calhau put up seven kills with four bocks and two aces, but Assabet (0-1) dropped its opener 25-18, 25-11, 25-20. Assabet's Erwin Castillo distributed eight assists with two aces.

KEEFE TECH 3, Nashoba 0: Bryan Costa put down 11 kills and pulled up seven digs for the Broncos (1-0) on Thursday. John Loja added 12 assists and 10 digs in a double-double, as the Broncos won 25-9, 25-18, 25-10. C.J. Sok contributed seven kills and four digs.
