METRO/PREP ROUNDUP: Second-ranked Miners nip Golden Arrows

Sep. 26—Visiting Linton defeated Sullivan 3-0 Tuesday night in a nonconference high school volleyball match.

The Miners, ranked second in Class 2A, prevailed in all three close sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.

* Riverton Parke 3, West Vigo 0 — At Mecca, the host Panthers continued their hot streak by sweeping the Vikings.

* Greencastle 3, Clay City 0 — At Greencastle, the visiting Eels fell short in a nonconference match.

* West Vigo 5, North Knox 1 — At Bicknell, Rilee Cramer and Masyn Fisk each had a goal and an assist for the Vikings.

Fisk assisted Cramer for the first goal, followed by Fisk unassisted, Alivia Stark unassisted, Calleigh Miller unassisted and Jessa Bark assisted by Cramer.

Lily Krause had nine saves for the Vikings, 9-7, who host Edgewood on Wednesday.

College

* Sycamore student-athletes garner MVC Academic Awards — Fifteen Indiana State student-athletes earned the Missouri Valley Conference Board of Directors Academic Excellence Award the conference announced Tuesday.

Those honored included ISU men's cross country and track and field competitor Jackson Kreig; women's swimming and diving student-athletes Carmina Armstrong, Elle Gilkerson, Marni Gray, Colleen O'Connor, Rachel Sanqunetti and Rhiannon Wozny; women's golfers Chelsea Morrow; soccer players Serra Hanrahan, Tara Hoffman and Anna Holcombe; women's cross country and track and field competitors Cassidy Bagby and Kelsey Bowlds; and volleyball players Karinna Gall and Kaitlyn Hamilton.

The 15 student-athletes highlight 215 Sycamores that were honored on the MVC Honor Roll for their work in the classroom over the 2022-23 academic year. Additionally, 95 ISU athletes received the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.

The Board of Directors Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average, partici­pation in athletics for a minimum of two years, and the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation (by the end of the Spring 2023 semester).

Also, 1014 student-athletes received the league's Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award, which requires a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for each of the previous two semesters, a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average and participation in athletics a minimum of two years.
