Marlboro's Josh Johnson sets Section 9 mark in 100 butterfly, Pine Bush claims team title

Marlboro senior Josh Johnson established a Section 9 and meet record, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 49.89 seconds at the Section 9 boys swimming championships on Saturday at Valley Central.

Johnson’s time ranks No. 4 in the state, according to the timing website SwimCloud. Johnson won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly at the 2023 meet.

Perennial contender Pine Bush captured the team championship with 319 points, edging Newburgh Free Academy (303) and outdistancing Washingtonville (208). The Bushmen posted wins by senior Tomek Oakes (200 individual medley) and 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Cornwall senior Zachary Rothman was a double winner, capturing the 200 freestyle (1:42.72, ranked No. 9 in state) and 500 free (4:37.98, No. 9 in state).

Additional wins were posted by Monroe-Woodbury senior Ariel Koyfman (100 breaststroke), Kingston senior Mason Crowley (100 free), Roosevelt senior Troy Speare (50 free) and Red Hook senior Owen Daniels (100 backstroke, improving more than a second in the 100 backstroke). Newburgh Free Academy won the 400 free relay. Goshen senior Grant Moore won the 1-meter diving on Friday.

The state championships will be held March 1-2 in Ithaca.
