Swimming: Four boys repeat as Section 9 champs, Monroe takes team title

MONTGOMERY -  It’s probably a good thing that Tomek Oakes didn’t take names of the people who talked trash about him last year.

Oakes was coming off a bout of COVID when the Section 9 swimming championships came around in 2022. Naturally, he didn’t perform up to his desires or capabilities and failed to earn a spot at states – he managed a fourth-place finish and a fifth.

Maybe his detractors didn’t realize his health situation, or didn’t care.

“A lot of people were saying some stuff they shouldn’t have. (Maybe) they shouldn’t be underestimating someone who just struggled,’’ Oakes said.

The Pine Bush junior already had the state-meet standard but he came out fired up in Saturday’s 100-yard freestyle final. He led by one-third of a second after one full lap at the Valley Central pool and lowered his season best to 47.94, winning by more than a second.

“It means a lot,’’ Oakes said. “I came in here with a lot of revenge. I felt like I shut them up for good.’’

Four champs of a year ago repeated.

Rhinebeck senior Finn Quested won the 200 individual medley (1:54.48) and 100 backstroke, setting a meet and pool record at 50.10 seconds, missing the sectional mark by 3-100ths of a second.

“I think the times are fairly solid,’’ said Quested, who will compete for Brown University, “but it’s not what I was exactly hoping for. But I know we have the state meet coming up and I’ll be able to swim faster there.’’

Warwick senior Jesse Abramson, bound for Fordham, won the 200 freestyle (1:43.07) by more than three seconds and the 500 free (4:47.41) by more than six seconds – he actually swam both events slightly faster during Thursday’s preliminaries so he was a bit disappointed with Saturday’s finals. He’s also been racing with the New York Sharks club team this week, taking a bit out of him, he said.

Marlboro junior Josh Johnson repeated in the 100 butterfly (52.03) and added a win in the 50 free (with a personal-best 21.98), an impressive feat considering the events were run back-to-back (with only a ‘B’ final in between). “It went mostly perfect for me,’’ Johnson said of the 50.

Kingston senior Andrew Sammons won the 100 breaststroke (59.33) by one-tenth of a second over Ariel Koyfman of Monroe-Woodbury – he said headed into the final as the No. 2 seed gave him the motivation to repeat. Sammons was especially happy to improve his time in front of former record holder and 2015 grad Kaelan Quinn, his Godbrother.

Monroe-Woodbury claimed the meet title with 293 points, outdistancing Newburgh (258.3), Pine Bush (209) and Warwick (205.3). Monroe won the opening 200 medley relay, Warwick the 200- and 400 free relays (with Abramson)

The state Federation championships are March 3-4 at Ithaca College.

Notes: Johnson is the first repeat winner in the 100 back sine Pine Bush’s Nick Boncek (2009-10) and first Marlboro winner in the 50 free since at least 1998. … Abramson’s repeat in the 200 free is the first since Roosevelt’s Rhett Burns (2017-18) while his repeat in the 500 free is the 12th time it’s occurred since 1998. … Quested’s repeat in the 200 IM is first since Newburgh’s Aleksey Makarov (2018-19) and the repeat in the 100 back is the ninth time over the past 25 years.
