Mariners LHP Paxton (lower back) placed on DL

The Seattle Mariners placed left-hander James Paxton on the 10-day disabled list with lower back inflammation, the team announced Friday.

General manager Jerry Dipoto said the injury is not serious, saying, "We don't think it is a lingering issue."

After three games this weekend in Colorado, the Mariners will pause for the All-Star break and won't play again until next Friday.

Paxton left Thursday's start against the Los Angeles Angels in the first inning after giving up three runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning, while throwing 17 pitches. It's his first trip to the DL this year, after he missed time last season with a strained left pectoral muscle and strained left forearm.

Paxton, 29, is 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 20 starts this season, which is tied for the most starts in MLB and four shy of his career high set last season. The "Big Maple" is 38-24 with a 3.38 ERA in his career, having spent parts of six seasons with the Mariners.

In corresponding moves, the Mariners optioned right-hander Nick Rumbelow and infielder Gordon Beckham to Triple-A Tacoma while recalling right-handers Casey Lawrence and Christian Bergman and selecting the contract of righty Mike Morin.

Bergman allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings in his only appearance in the majors this season, a no-decision against the Texas Rangers on May 16.
