Marcus Stroman tosses four scoreless innings, but Yankees fall to Orioles

The Yankees scored three runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough, losing to the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on Saturday.

Here are the takeaways...

- Marcus Stroman got out to a strong start against the Orioles, tossing a quick 1-2-3 inning with a groundout, flyout, and pop-out.

Stroman allowed a single to Ryan O'Hearn to open the second, but then forced a double play and struck out Coby Mayo to end the inning.

The 32-year-old tossed another 1-2-3 inning in the third, with all the outs coming on fly balls. Stroman came out for the fourth and got some help from Trent Grisham in center on a diving catch for the first out. He then recorded two strikeouts to close out the inning and end his day. Stroman finished with two hits allowed and three strikeouts over 4.0 IP in his second appearance as a Yankee.

- It was a nice day for Anthony Volpe at the plate against Baltimore LHP Cole Irvin, as the youngster opened the game with a leadoff single and then recorded another base hit in the third inning. Volpe finished the game 2-for-3.

Cody Morris replaced Stroman in the fifth and allowed a solo homer to Austin Hays to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead. Morris settled in and retired the next three batters to end the inning. The 27-year-old righty got into a bases loaded jam in the sixth, and allowed a two-run double to Ryan Mountcastle to push the O's lead to 3-0, ending his day on the mound.

Nick Ramirez came in for relief and struck out the first batter he faced, but then let up a two-run single to Hays as the Orioles took a 5-0 lead. Ramirez later allowed a two-run homer to Kyle Stowers in the bottom of the seventh to give Baltimore a 7-0 lead.

- Jahmai Jones went 1-for-1 with a walk and came around to score on a sac fly from Caleb Durbin in the top of the ninth, as the Yanks trailed 7-1. Jeter Downs and Josh Breaux recorded back-to-back singles, and both would come around to score on Brandon Lockridge's single to cut the deficit to 7-3. Breaux finished 2-for-2, Downs went 1-for-2 with a strikeout, and Lockridge went 1-for-1 with the two RBI and a walk.
