Maine-Endwell thrower voted Athlete of the Week; submit your vote for this week's winner

Panayiota Anastos of the Maine-Endwell girls track & field team has been voted Athlete of the Week for competition of April 28 to May 4.

Anastos won the shot put (38 feet, 4.25 inches) and discus (108-7) at Vestal's Golden Bear Mixed Relays on May 3. She came back the next day and took both events at the Horseheads Blue Shoes Invitational, with efforts of 34 feet, 11.5 inches in the shot put and 110 feet, 5 inches in the discus.

The senior comes off a winter season in which she placed second among public schools and third overall in the shot put at the New York state indoor championship meet.

Anastos received 51.5% of the 59,393 votes cast, with Deposit-Hancock softball player Addison Makowski second with 44.3% of the tally. Other nominees were Lauren Paske of the Chenango Forks girls track & field team, Horseheads baseball player Micah Hays and Horseheads softball player Caitlin Yearick.

Vote for this week's winner

Six athletes have been selected as nominees for Athlete of the Week for the period of May 5 to 11.

Voting will be open until the end of the day Wednesday to decide the winner from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.

Nominees are based primarily on results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by sports reporters from the publications.

The nominees:

Ava Cirigliano, Sidney softball: She reached 500 career varsity strikeouts in tossing a one-hitter in a 13-0 victory over Oxford. Cirigliano struck out 14 and went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and three RBIs. In the Midstate Athletic Conference semifinals, she tossed a four-hitter with nine strikeouts to spearhead a 5-2 victory over Bainbridge-Guilford.

Gabby Milazzo, Thomas A. Edison softball: Milazzo tossed a three-hitter to lead the Spartans to a 9-3 victory over Lansing in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large School championship game. She struck out 12, walked one and all three runs against her were unearned. Milazzo went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Mack Patterson, Chenango Valley track & field: He was a double-winner at Saturday's Parkhurst Invitational at Union-Endicott. Patterson won the shot put with an effort of 47 feet, 10 inches and the discus with a distance of 155 feet, 2 inches.

Zuri Ruffin, Corning boys track & field: Ruffin was a triple-winner at Corning's Fast Times Invitational on Friday. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.10 seconds, the 200 in 22.91 and the long jump with a top leap of 20 feet, 10.5 inches. Earlier in the week, he helped Corning finish a 4-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference West dual-meet season by winning the long jump (21 feet, 11.5 inches) in a 98-43 victory over Ithaca.

Reilly Storer, Vestal softball: She pitched 14 innings in two Golden Bears wins and allowed two hits while striking out 14 and walking three. That included a no-hitter with five strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over Union-Endicott. In Saturday's STAC semifinals, Storer tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 3-0 triumph against Chenango Valley.

Conlan Taylor, Owego Free Academy baseball: Taylor made two starts during the week and allowed one run on seven hits over 12 innings. He gave up one hit and struck out six in five scoreless innings in a no-decision as part of a 3-1 loss to Vestal. Taylor tossed a six-hitter Saturday in a 5-1 win over Horseheads in a STAC semifinal, striking out four and walking two.
