The 2023/24 Premier League season is under way and you can follow every game and every goal right here with The Independent.

This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

A rather ruthless Brentford ran away with this one at Kenilworth Road 5-1, and now find themselves a good way towards being safe in the Premier League for yet another season. For Luton Town, this poor performance at home leaves them with some slimmer survival hopes. The Hatters saw solid build-up in the first half, yet just missed that final ball. Wissa punished this and opened the scoring in the 24th minute with mercurial class as he found the top right corner after being fed in by Mbeumo. The second goal was a little less impressive just before the break, and followed some gangly defending from Burke who failed to clear an Mbeumo cut back. Luton looked to react strongly, yet again just couldn’t get anything concrete going until late on. Before that, they faced a real onslaught as Brentford took advantage of space and time afforded to them. The third came after the hour with Pinnock’s smart (albeit unmarked) header. The fourth came just two minutes later as Luton collapsed with Mbeumo crossing for a free Lewis-Potter at the back left post. Number five arrived four minutes from time, as Schade put it into trouncing territory. Berry grabbed one back after a Janelt mistake, yet with four games to go - it’s a meagre offering in comparison to the Hatters’ survival aspirations. Edwards’ men admittedly still remain in the mix, with attention turning to their next game away at Wolves. In the meantime, eyes will certainly be glued to tomorrow’s clash between Everton and Nottingham Forest for a little help going into a tense finale at the foot of the table. On the contrary, Brentford ready themselves for a trip to Everton next Saturday. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, goodbye!

Maupay hits a speculative free-kick over as the last kick of the game. That's it, finally Luton can get retreat to the drawing board. That was quite something...

Luton Town vs Brentford

Although Luton have been truly pummeled here, mainly in large part to the ever-spritely Mbeumo - this late goal continues their scoring trend in the final knockings. Luton have now scored 19 goals in the last 15 minutes of the second half, only Liverpool (27) have scored more in the English Premier League this season.

Brentford now have Maupay on, as said prior, he's played in by Mbeumo in behind but Osho stretches and stops the Frenchman nicely. Bit late for defending mate...

Damsgaard fires on goal after solid transition work from Wissa, and it goes through Osho's legs at pace, forcing a fine low stop from Kaminski. The Belgian parries slightly, but dives on it before the following Lewis-Potter can get anywhere near. Great goalkeeping.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:24

Looking back at that Wissa first half double: that was the first time since playing Tottenham in their opening Premier League game this season, where Brentford have scored more than once in the first half. It's taken 32 games since that one for a first half double in any capacity.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:21

Berry commits a cynical fould on the left side, going straight through the back of his man on the touchline. Lucky to get away without a card. The ball comes in and Collins rises. However, it's not a strong connection and Kaminski has a goal-kick coming.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:19

Luton look good in possession here and it's slotted out left to Chong. He drives a curling low cross in for Berry to run to, yet a Brentford foot puts it behind for a corner on the left. That's dealt with by the travelling Bees and then the resulting Doughty cross gets caught by Flekken.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:17

Clark fouls Wissa as frustrations seap in, especially after the Doughty decision wasn't given. Clark just gets a warning after leaving the scorer facedown on the turf.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:16

A Doughty drive down the left ends with him on the floor. He remains there without a foul, much to the distaste of the crowd, and Brentford break onwards with Wissa and Co. looking continuously deadly. It's worked right and held up for Mbuemo but the hosts can nod it away.

Luton Town vs Brentford

16:12

While that previous move came to nothing, aside from a jostling battle between Pinnock and Osho, Brentford surge on with Mbuemo. He is constantly looking like a danger. Luton manage to get it away with Doughty after he can't get his shot away clearly.

Luton Town vs Brentford

After some likely sharp words of encouragement from Edwards, Luton have it all to do against Thomas Frank's mercurial Wissa-driven Bees. After that goalless first half for the hosts, it signalled the fact they've failed to score a first-half goal in 23 of their 34 games. Only Sheffield United (25) have failed to score more often in the English Premier League this season. In this decisive second period, the next goal will be important. Luton are looking to better their first half xG of 0.34. This is dwarfed hugely by the visiting side, as they hold an xG of 1.63. The half-time probablities see a Luton win ranked at 1.8 per cent where Brentford's wining chance is 91.0 in vast comparison. As the teams emerge fore the second half, Edwards has gone for a change...

Luton Town vs Brentford

Well, at a time of the season where Luton realistically require any points in order to survive - it’s Brentford who go into the break the happier of the two sides. Rob Edwards’ side have played up to their fervent home support, yet that decisive final ball has been lacking. Doughty, Morris, and Kabore managed to make Flekken work briefly in the first half, yet it was ultimately Kaminski who was put to work to pick the ball out of the net twice. Courtesy of Wissa’s ninth and tenth goals of the term, the first arrived excellently in the 24th minute. Mbuemo slid in his offensive partner with aplomb and the finish into the top right was exemplary. The second goal was a little less impressive just before the break, and followed some gangly defending from Burke who failed to clear an Mbuemo cut back. Luton could be deemed unfortunate with that one, yet with Mbuemo’s curling strike rattling the crossbar from the right, they’ll definitely be looking to the forwards to make much-needed inroads up the other end.

MBUEMO OFF THE BAR! Kaminski was left to watch as the Cameroonian international superbly curled one after it sat up nice on the right side of the box. It strikes the bar and comes back out for Lewis-Potter, but too much dithering allows the hosts to fire away and counter, although to no avail.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:46

Wissa drives at Onyedinma on the left. The goal-scorer wants a corner but he doesn't get his way. It was nicely done by the substitute, getting the ball out for a Luton goal-kick.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:45

Luton have the attacking intent, it's just that final ball that's lacking at the moment. Trying to fight back, it'll no doubt be a lingering fact that the Hatters have a record of W1, D6, L16 when conceding the opening goal in the English Premier League this season.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:44

Barkley, Clark and Chong intricately work it down the left of Brentford's box after a sweeping Mengi cross-field pass gets them going. Ajer tracks back well and slides it out for a corner before Chong can get a shot away. The set-piece is inaffective as Morris is just ahead of the ball and Brentford clear.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:41

Luton have work to do after half-clearing the following corner. The hosts look quite boxed in right now. A long throw comes in from the left and fortunately for fans of the home persuasion, Kaminski claims.

Luton Town vs Brentford

Lewis-Potter is slid through on the left artfully by Wissa. He cuts back in and fires on goal... but Mengi blocks heroically!

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:37

Chong and Clark work it well, rushing forward with pace. However, that final ball is missing for Kabore on the right and the Bees clear. That knock on the ankle has definitely taken a yard off him, but that ball was poor from Clark. Onyedinma is getting ready by the looks of things.

Luton clear the following kick, despite Morris heading it straight up. Wissa tries to work it back out and Damsgaard flights one over before Chong holds off his runner for a Luton goal-kick.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:35

Well, for a member of Luton's walking wounded contingent, that's not bad from Kabore as he blocks off the line! It's out for a corner on the right and the ensuing set-piece is nodded away confidently by Mengi for another on that side.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:33

There's a brief stoppage here as high-flying Kabore seeks treatment after clashing with Reguilon. He went in with typical vigour, yet was almost spat out of the 50-50, landing awkwardly on his ankle. He's off but looks to get back into the fray shortly.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:33

Chong blazes over! The rebuild has been admirable since going behind, yet he'll definitely want that one back. He had a bit of space, yet could only flash it across the goal. It could still be rising now...

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:31

Luton look to react straight away and Kabore is in behind on the right byline. There's a frustrating lack of Luton bodies in the middle and Flekken can put it behind with his legs. The corner on the right is then cleared with ease by the visitors.

Brentford are putting in a dangerous shift in transition. Luton half-clear a ball after Mbeumo makes trouble for Osho. Janelt fires it back but after more bobbling, Kaminski claims.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:26

After the first 15 minutes, data reflects that 42.3% of the action has been in the Luton Town third. Edwards will be hoping for a more solid offensive reaction.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:25

Brentford go close! Kaminski pulls out an excellent save from Keane-Potter from mere yards out! It's headed down at him after a ball from the left and he tips it smartly off his line. Kabore puts it behind for a corner on the right. There's a real scramble for the ball after this - yet Luton somehow get it clear.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:24

Ajer fouls Chong on the left side. The fleet-footed winger works his magic and the towering Norwegian can't get around his body to the ball. Doughty whips one in from the set-piece, yet it's claimed by Flekken and Brentford counter...

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:20

Brentford won the last Premier League meeting between the teams, triumphing 3-1 at Gtech Community Stadium in December. In one of Rob Edwards' admitted least-favourite Town performances this term, Neal Maupay scored first for the Bees in the 49th minute. Ben Mee and Shandon Baptiste also found the net. Jacob Brown scored the Hatters' only goal in the 76th minute.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:19

Ajer tries to break in behind Luton's line after a top team passing move. Chong cuts it out but Brentford regain possession, enabling Mbuemo to cross. Keane-Potter is there at the back left post, yet can't head it cleanly and it spirals upwards. Luton gather and clear.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:18

The pace is building here, and speaking to that, Luton have worked it up the right side of the pitch themselves. Kabore and Clark try and work it from a throw, yet the latter is a little too exhuberant with a lunge on Reguilon who wins a foul.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:17

Brentford move it forward down the right and Chong tracks back to play it off his man for a Kaminski goalkick. That was smart work there from the ex-Manchester United man.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:15

Doughty forces a save from Flekken from the left. It's a palm-stinging effort after his earlier low cross rebounds out to him. The Dutchman stood firm at his near post there but the fact it's out for a throw on the left shows just how hard Doughty struck it.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:14

The first ten minutes have seen a very bitty beginning here. Brentford look to build possession, while Luton are driving forward with more urgency it feels.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:13

Lewis-Potter finds a way behind down the central-left channel in the blindspot of Kabore. The Burkinabe defender gets back in time and puts him off as the winger fires wide left. He's got to switch on here. Brentford may take that opportunity next time.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:10

Kaminski drives a long goal-kick up the pitch. Clark gets it under control but Brentford take no chances in pelting it clear. Luton's direct approach being hit with the very same defensively it seems. We've got a very English game here, it seems...

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:10

Brentford are moving the ball across the back now as Luton allow them time. In this moment, let's look at the probabilities. Before the match, Luton's chances of a win were at 31.4 per cent with a draw at 27.6. Brentford's chances of victory sit at 41 per cent.

Luton Town vs Brentford

An interesting fact about referee Jarred Gillett - he's handed out 109 yellow cards and three red cards across his 25 games this season. Luton Town last had a game officiated by Gillett when they lost at Spurs last month.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:07

There's been a stop here as Morris gives away an offensive foul. Luton gain back possession after the free-kick yet need to settle down.

Luton Town vs Brentford

It's a deep free-kick taken short to Jensen by Reguilon. He tries to dink it over the Luton backline, yet the hosts clear. It's reworked and Pinnock rises to send it high and wide of the goal.

Luton Town vs Brentford

15:05

Returning slyly, Lokonga looks to make a mazey run through the midfield. He goes through two, draws contact, yet the referee sees no foul. Brentford go forward with Reguilon and Clark brings him down on the left side.

Luton manager Rob Edwards makes four changes from Saturday's 5-1 defeat at Manchester City. Man City loanee Issa Kabore returns after he was ineligible to face his parent club. Despite playing the depleted squad card in the press this week, Edwards’ teamsheet reveals that Teden Mengi is cleared to play following doubt around his knee. As does defender Gabriel Osho - he makes his first appearance since the 9th of March after a bruised bone knee injury. Even better for the Hatters, Albert Sambi Lokonga starts following an eight-game absence due to a thigh problem. Fred Onyedinma, Daiki Hashioka, Luke Berry and Andros Townsend drop to the bench.

Although just a matter of points from cementing their Premier League status this season, 15th-placed Brentford still look to make things certain with this visit to Luton. Their 18-placed hosts have a little less leeway, and know just how important a win might be here, as three points would see them step out of the relegation zone with four games left to go. Hatters fans will be glad to see a number of returning faces, as they hope to scramble some points together while putting last week's 5-1 defeat at Manchester City firmly behind them. Brentford arrive in better form. Beating Sheffield United 2-0 last time out, this capped a four-game unbeaten streak (W1 D3).
