Friday's highlights

Flour Bluff and Calallen's non-district game produced a playoff-like atmosphere. The Wildcats were not in awe, though and struck early and often. Luke Medina put the Wildcats on the board first near the end of the first quarter to cap an eight-play, 52-yard drive with a 3-yard carry into the end zone. Medina erupted for two more touchdowns in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run and a 44-yard catch from quarterback Sebastian Dennis. The Hornets recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half and later scored on a 9-yard carry by Andre Mimms. Clay Addison's field goal brought the Hornets within 11 and an interception by Cameran Dickson gave Flour Bluff some life in the fourth quarter. But the Wildcats' defense forced the Hornets to turn the ball over on downs and Dennis put on the finishing touches with a 9-yard rushing touchdown.

Friday's stars

Medina led the Wildcats with 185 rushing yards and three touchdowns and Cameron Johnson ran for 57 yards to pace Flour Bluff on the ground. Andre Mimms caught four passes for 43 yards and scored on a 9-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jayden Paluseo completed 11 passes for 102 yards and Calallen's Dennis completed two passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.

They said it

Calallen coach Steve Campbell on the Wildcats' key non-district win against the Hornets: "I could never be prouder of a bunch of guys in my life and my whole coaching career. They are some of the finest young men that you will ever encounter and that's why I'm in this business. They worked hard all week long and the coaches worked tirelessly to put together a game plan, and these young men executed that game plan to a tee."

Calallen running back Luke Medina on his three touchdown night: "It starts off at practice. ... We work hard and we didn't like coming off a loss early in the season. ... We were set to lose, so everyone was hungry. The offensive line has been working their butts like crazy. They start everything for us and the defense works hard every single day."

Flour Bluff's Cameran Dickson on looking ahead to next week's game against Alice: "We just have to work harder and prepare for Alice and the rest of the season. We really want to step up our momentum and be prepared and be ready."
