Loud and proud: Cuba superfan in Taiwan is the WBC's early breakout star

There's one sure-fire way to know when Cuba is playing in the World Baseball Classic – and it has nothing to do with the uniforms or the team on the field.

It's obvious because of the sound.

Somewhere in the stands, Pablo Avila will be there. And so will his horn.

Most likely known as simply, The Horn Guy, Avila will celebrate any positive play by Team Cuba by blowing his impossible-to-ignore instrument.

Born in Cuba but now working as a truck driver in Houston, Avila travels the globe to watch his homeland play. On Wedesday, he was in Taiwan to watch Cuba take on the Netherlands in the WBC opener.

"Wherever they go, I’m going," he told MLB.com through an interpreter, adding that he's been to every WBC in the tournament's 17-year history.

Even in Taiwan, Avila quickly gained celebrity status, MLB.com reports, with many in the crowd cheering with him and seeking him out for selfies.

He even got a chance to hold the Cuban national flag in a pregame photo representing several countries in Pool A.

Unfortunately for Avila, Cuba lost its opener to the Netherlands by a score of 4-2. They'll need to bounce back to keep their championship hopes alive – and extend Avila's travel schedule.
