Local Sports: Swiderski, Davis celebrate at NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dundee graduates Casey Swiderski and Braeden Davis both had reasons to celebrate at the NCAA Wrestling Championships during the weekend.

Swiderski earned All-American status for Iowa State by placing seventh at 149 pounds and Davis helped Penn State win the national championship.

Penn State dominated the tournament, scoring 155.5 points, more than doubling the total for runner-up Michigan (71). Iowa State took fifth with 64.5.

Swiderski won his first two matches by 2-1 and 8-5 in a tiebreaker. He lost in the quarterfinals to top-seed Ridge Lovett of Nebraska 14-4.

He bounced back to beat the No. 14, then lost to the fifth seeded before finishing his weekend with a 19-8 romp in the seventh-place match.

Davis just missed joining Swiderski as an All-American, bowing out in the blood round at 125 pounds.

He beat Tristan Lujan of Michigan State 8-1 in his first match, then pulled out a 2-1 win over Brett Ungar of Cornell 2-1 in his second round before falling 3-2 in the quarterfinals to the eighth seed and 4-1 to the fifth seed.

Dundee’s Stoney Buell also wrestled in the national finals for Purdue at 165 pounds. He had a tough draw, taking on the No. 9 and No. 25 seeds. He dropped both matches.

U-M sweeps Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Monroe graduate Ellie Sieler and her Michigan teammates got the best of Whiteford graduate Ally VanBrandt and Indiana during the weekend.

The Wolverines swept the three-game series, winning 15-6 Friday, 7-1 Saturday and 10-1 Sunday.

Sieler was 4-for-10 in the three games, drove in four runs and scored three times. She homered and doubled in the first game.

VanBrandt was one of the most productive hitters for Indiana, going 3-for-10. She scored twice and drove in a run Friday.

Flat Rock wins at home

FLAT ROCK – Isabella Thomas scored off an assist from Megan Woelkers and Flat Rock made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Wyandotte Roosevelt Monday.

Keola Botts recorded the shutout.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL

Bedford comes back

TEMPERANCE – Jason Bryant and Brady Boisselle had two hits each and Landon Sparks and Evan Bullard pitched well as Bedford came from behind to beat Toledo St. John 12-4 in its season opener.
