Local Sports: SMCC, Jefferson voleyball, SMCC, Huron, Milan scocer win

MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central has made it through the regular season and two rounds of the Huron League Volleyball Tournament with losing a set.

Riverview was no match for the Kestrels Wednesday in a 25-12, 25-20, 25-18 sweep.

SMCC improved to 23-4-1 overall, and 9-0 in the league.

Leaders for the Kestrels included McKenna Payne (38 assists), Jessica Costlow (11 kills, 17 digs, 2 aces), Madeline Dettling (15 kills), Olivia Beaudrie (2 aces), Brooke Mossburg (2 aces), Anaiese Flint (2 blocks), Jillian Anderson (2 blocks) and Ashley Ruhlig (9 digs).

Jefferson coming together

MONROE – The Huron League Volleyball Tournament is bringing out the best in Jefferson.

The Bears knocked off New Boston Huron 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15 Wednesday.

“It’s been so rewarding to watch this team turn the corner and play to their full potential,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “We have really been focusing on eliminating unforced errors and capitalizing on the other team's mistakes and that’s what we did tonight.”

Several Jefferson players had big numbers including Anna Boggs (33 digs, 15 kills, 2 aces), Meagan Middleton (21 digs, 4 kills), Lindsey Gennoe (29 assists, 6 kills, 15 digs) and Clare Boggs (15 digs, 4 aces).

Nye sparks Milan win

CARELTON – Courtney Nye racked up 13 kills, 11 digs and 5 aces to lead Milan to a 25-15, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 win over Airport in the Huron League Tournament Wednesday.

Malea Wourman added 12 kills and Madison Slack 32 assists and 10 digs. Other standouts were Ava Demond, Mariah Stines, Lauryn Parris and Hailey Knox.

Airport (9-21-1) was led by Madi Boehm (20 digs), Raschel Weaver (17 digs), Renee Shrewsbury (20 kills) and Peyton Zajac (14 assists, 12 digs).

Ida loses twice

ADRIAN – Ida dipped to 17-14-3 with losses to Lenawee Christian Wednesday and Adrian Madison (3-1) Tuesday.

Addy Wilt led in kills both nights. Jessica Schrader led the defense and Gabby Gobrecht and Maddi McCain played well.

SMCC moves on

RIVERVIEW – St. Mary Catholic Central will play in the semifinals of the Division 4 District at Riverview Gabriel Richard after turning aside Ann Arbor Central 5-2 Wednesday.

Holden Kennedy logged three goals and an assist and Will Shafer, fighting his way back from a knee injury, had two goals and an assist. Cameron Cole added an assist

“We played a good game overall,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said. “It was great to see Holden get his goal scoring touch back. It was also huge for us to get Will Shafer back on the field and providing an offensive spark.”

The Falcons will take on Lutheran Westland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lutheran Westland cruised past Westland Hope Christian 7-2 Wednesday.

Huron reaches semis

ALLEN PARK – New Boston Huron slipped past Allen Park 3-2 Wednesday in the opening game of the Division 2 District that Allen Park is hosting.

Huron will play the winner of Thursday’s Southgate Anderson at Gibraltar Carlson match in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Milan dominates Summit

MILAN – Milan overwhelmed Summit Academy 11-0 in District Tournament action Wednesday.

Carter Higgins led the way with 4 goals and 2 assists, pushing his season totals to 29 goals and 21 assists.

Wesley Murphy added 2 goals and Noah Bussell, Parker Beard, Beau LeBlanc, Nolan Matley and Fred Brown had one each. Matley, Bussel and Gavin Tomecek each logged a pair of assists with Alex Laplant and Brown contributing one.

The Big Reds move on to the semifinals of the Division 3 District at Flat Rock to play Ida or Romulus at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Trenton ousts Airport

TRENTON – The greatest season in Airport history ended Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Trenton in the opening game of the state tournament.

“I am beyond proud of this group and the progress they have shown,” Airport coach Goran Cepo said of his 16-6-1 squad. “The future is bright for these boys for sure.”

Nolan Sanders, Nolan Ortega and Skyyler Gonzalez were outstanding in the midfield.

Bedford bows out

ANN ARBOR – Bedford bowed out of the state tournament with a 2-0 loss to Ann Arbor Skyline Wednesday.

Skyline will play Ann Arbor Pioneer or Ann Arbor Huron in the semifinals of the Division 1 District at Ypsilanti Lincoln Tuesday.

Bedford, Carlson make state

GIBRALTAR – Bedford and Gibraltar Carlson both qualified for the state finals out of the Division 2 Regional Carlson hosted Wednesday.

Bedford scored 11 points and placed third with Carlson a point behind. Any team with 10 or more points qualifies for state. Trenton (18) and Wyandotte Roosevelt (13) took the top two spots, so four teams from one Regional made it to state.

"This is my 18th year (and) I have never seen that before," said Carlson coach Rocco Giorgi.

Jason Nejedlik (No. 1 singles) and Carter Ryan (No. 4 singles) were champions for the Mules. Nejedlik ran his record to 22-2 and Ryan won all of his matches in straight sets, never losing more than two games.

Ty Zapadka and Vince Cole also won singles matches and three of the four doubles teams won at least one match.

“It was a great team effort by all to get qualified for states with a very young team with eight first-year players,” Bedford coach Eric Cukierski said.

Carlson, which missed making the state finals last year by 1 point, qualified for the 11th time in the last 12 years.

Owen Anderson and Preston Eighmey were champions for the Marauders at No. 2 doubles, Rory Jenson and Nolan Burgei (No. 3 doubles) and Kaidden Daddow and Cole Fountain (No. 4 doubles) placed second.

Milan handles Flat Rock

FLAT ROCK – Lila McKenna (200, 500 freestyle) and Kiera Luhrs (50, 100 freestyle) were double winners as Milan moved to 13-1 with a 122-48 win over Flat Rock Wednesday.

Other Milan winners were Annabelle Williams, Kam Stripp and Mary Kate Wayne.
