Local Sports:Carlson puts up fight; Monroe baseball keeps rolling

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson’s girls soccer team was facing a huge challenge Wednesday.

The Marauders hosted a Trenton team ranked No. 8 in the state for Division 2 and undefeated in the Downriver League.

They responded to that challenge but unfortunately could not find a way to put the ball in the net and fell 2-0.

Trenton netted both of its goals in the first half.

“We knew we had our work cut out for us,” Carlson coach Steve Briggs said. “I told them to hold nothing back. In the second half, we showed a lot of grit. My girls didn’t give up.”

Christine Piatt-Bakos, Rachael Poli, and Maya Genzel controlled the midfield, Izzy Sgro and Kylie Iwasko were strong on defense, and Katie Frommann was outstanding in net.

“Katie Frommann stood on her head a couple of times,” Briggs said.

Carlson fell to 6-6-4 overall and 6-3-1 in the Downriver League.

PREP BASEBALL

Monroe keeps rolling

Monroe pushed its record to 19-6-1 overall and 13-5 in the Southeastern Conference Red with a 5-2 victory over Ypsilanti Lincoln Wednesday.

Ryan Sieler and Drew Scznsny collected two hits each and Sieler, Owen Yount, and Carson Liedel drove in runs.

Yount was the winning pitcher and Braden Pearce picked up a save.

Huron stops Devils

NEW BOSTON – Gavin Moczydlowsky went 3-for-3 and Jacob Handyside added two hits for New Boston Huron in a 13-3 rout of Grosse Ile Wednesday.

Gavin O’Hara was the winning pitcher.

Schroeder, Zanger star

ADRIAN – Trevor Schroeder doubled home a run in fourth inning to snap a 2-2 tie, then came home on an RBI single by Ryan Zanger and Dundee went on to a 9-4 win over Adrian Madison Wednesday.

Schroeder and Zanger both finished with two hits.

Bobcat pitchers excel

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford pitchers Nate Stevens (9) and Logan Tammerine (14) combined for 23 strikeouts and allowed just five hits as the Bobcats swept Summerfield 5-0 and 3-1 Wednesday.

Tammerine, Shea Ruddy, Brenden Masters, and Luke Rasor each had two hits as Whiteford improved to 16-6 overall and 9-1 in the Tri-County Conference.

Hayden Noland scored the only run of the day for Summerfield when he singled, stole second and third, and then scored on an error. Jake Wadsworth and Logan Keane pitched well for the Bulldogs.

Airport offense hums

CARLETON – Jack Mills, Drew VanWasshenova, and Cooper Nye collected two hits each and Nye stole three bases in an 11-1 Airport win over Flat Rock Wednesday.

Sean Langton earned the pitching win.

Milan’s Gebhardt sharp

MILAN – Luke Gebhardt tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to carry Milan past Jefferson 5-1 Wednesday.

Gavin Kruise drove in two runs.

Bedford pounded

ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Pioneer pounded out 12 hits in a 13-3 win over Bedford Wednesday.

Connor Gambino went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and Chase Baumgartner also had two hits for Bedford.

Adkins lifts Mason

ERIE – Freshman Preston Adkins had his best day of the season, going 2-for-3 and making several good catches in the outfield, but Erie Mason was swept 13-3 and 4-2 by Britton Deerfield Wednesday.

Collin Brooks was 3-for-4 in the first game and pitched well in the second. Logan Goodin had two hits in the second game.

Carlson wastes gem

WYANDOTTE – John Hojnowski yielded three hits and no earned runs while striking out 12 in six innings, but Gibraltar Carlson fell 3-1 to Wyandotte Roosevelt 3-1 Wednesday.

Jackson Zachary led the offense for the 10-11 Marauders with two hits.

Milan back on track

MILAN – Milan bounced back from a loss Monday to top Ann Arbor Greenhills Wednesday on goals by Sylvia Koch, Julia Satarino, Leah Mazei, and Emma Budd.

Aubree Higgins was credited with two assists.

Rams spread goals

SOUTHGATE – Courtney Krasewski scored a pair of goals and added an assist for Flat Rock in an 8-0 win over Southgate Anderson Wednesday.

Bella Thomas, Savannah Bodart, Sophia Ellison, Megan Woelkers, Anna Klein, and Sarah Harkins also scored.

PREP GOLF

Dundee makes bid

Carter Bahn was the medalist with a round of 38 as Dundee made a strong bid for the title in the Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree at Green Meadows Wednesday.

The Vikings shot 169 to finish as the runner-up, just two strokes beind Blissfield. Ida took fourth with 179.

Ida’s Davin Slater had the fourth-best score of the day with 41. Jack Salenbien (42) and Zach Tackett (43) of Dundee also were in contention.

Carlson takes second

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson shot 160 at Lake Erie Metropark Wednesday to finish a shot behind champion Trenton in a Downriver League Quad Match.

Carlson’s Landon Kongeal tied for medalist honors with a round of 37 and teammates Zackary Sisk and Jase Marcott shot 40 for the third-best score of the day.

SMCC mauls Bears

Josh Kansier (44), Thomas Rivard (46), Leo Milnar (47), and Chase Terrasi (49) of St. Mary Catholic Central had the four best scores of the afternoon in a 186-235 win over Jefferson.

Been Peer led the Bears with 53.

Big win for Huron

GIBRALTAR – New Boston Huron slipped past Grosse Ile 171-173 at Willow Metropark in a key Huron League match Wednesday.

Tyler Toth and Marco Tylutki both checked in at 41 to lead Huron, which also got 44 from Nicholas Kosiba and 45 from Gavin Grima.

SMCC finishes fourth

ANN ARBOR – St. Mary Catholic Central finished fourth in the Division 4 Regional at Ann Arbor Greenhills Wednesday.

Singles players Molly Blanchett (No. 1) and Elizabeth Zwack (No. 3) lost in the semifinals along with doubles units Claire Leach-Hannah Borer (No. 1) and Ionna Laskaska-Gianna Benvenuto (No. 2).

Bedford pitchers shine

TEMPERANCE – Devin Rayburn fired a three-hit shutout in the first game and Cooper Starr threw well in the second to lead Bedford to a 9-0, 8-2 sweep of Ann Arbor Pioneer Wednesday.
