Local Sports: Ball leads Dundee to title; Bedford, Monroe honoroed

DUNDEE – Joslyn Ball was named Swimmer of the Meet as she led Dundee to the title in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League championship Saturday.

Ball won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, setting a school record in each event.

She also swam with Kaylee Desbrough, Kaylee Imo and Lily Ratliff on the winning 200 freestyle relay that set a pool record, and she also was a member of the winning medley relay with Imo, Sara Carter and Natalie Bron.

Carter was a double winner in the individual medley and 500 freestyle and swam with Bron, Brook Hester and Desbrough on the winning 400 freestyle relay.

Imo won the breaststroke and Ratliff ruled the backstroke.

Dundee finished with 373 points to 248 for runner-up Riverview. Monroe, which finished seventh in the meet a year ago with 69 points, took third with 200.

St. Mary Catholic Central placed fifth with 134, Erie Mason-Ida seventh with 55, and New Boston Huron-Taylor eighth with 22.

Top performers for Monroe were Nicole Rykse, Sophia Smith, Abby Dieckmann, Lauren Lahna, and Delani Wiley.

“As a coach, I couldn’t have asked for more out of this team,” Monroe coach Erin Dowen said.

SMCC’s Maya Zaleski was second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and swam on relays that were third and fourth. The Kestrels recorded 38 best times with Kaylee Kamprath, McKenzie Kidd, Monika Burkardt, Natalie Loughran, Braelyn Runyon, Brianna Lynch, Natalie Baisden, Catherine Ambs, Sunny Duran, and Brigeta Yakoo leading the way.

Alexis Etue, Sophia Sorg, and Jessica Lay were the top scorers for Erie-Ida. Mia Balcerzak, Shelby Potter, Sydney LaVoy, Issy Cureton, Natalie Lewis, Sidney Roderick, Taylor Collyer, Alli Ellis, and Lexi Globensky recorded personal-best times.

Fuleky leads Bedford

BIRMINGHAM – Alexa Fuleky won the butterfly and backstroke for Bedford in Saturday’s Southeastern Michigan Independent Swimming League upper-division championships.

Fulkey also qualified for state in both the medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Peyton Prielipp, Mia Tennant, and Gabby Pisanti were her partners on the medley and Pisanti, Mia Tennant, and Lilly Landolt in the 200.

Pisanti won the 50 free, Annabelle Hill was second in the 500, and Prielipp third in the backstroke.

Bedford took third in the team standings, just 4 points behind runner-up Adrian. Pontiac Notre Dame won the meet.

PREP FOOTBALL

Trojans, Mules picked

ANN ARBOR – Four Monroe players and three from Bedford have been named to the All-Southeastern Conference Red team selected by league coaches.

Monroe’s honorees were Breylon Richards (line) on offense and Adam Nabozny (line), Tanner Collett (linebacker), and Logan Loveland (back) on defense.

Hunter Faunce (line) made it on offense and Lucas Gerber (linebacker) and Nolan Laskey (line) on defense for Bedford.

Honorable mention choices were Hunter Poignon, Brandon Rozek, Cole Johnson, Avery Labadie, and Blake Rickner of Bedford and Jax Jones, Dinato Gandara, and Nabozny of Monroe.

Aiden Newton of Monroe and Bedford’s Logan Benjamin earned spots on the Sportsmanship Team.

ADULT SOCCER

Silva, Caruso lead

Felipe Silva and Tyler Caruso each scored two goals to lead Not Fast, Just Furious to a 7-5 win over Athletico in the Monroe Adult Coed Indoor Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

Habeeb Bello scored four goals for Athletico.
