LOCAL ROUNDUP: Ferere, Dawkins lead Southern past Trinity despite 52 from Payne

Nov. 22—GUILFORD COUNTY — Jamias Ferere and Jyi Dawkins each scored 30 points to help lift Southern Guilford past Trinity 78-72 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Southern.

Jucqarie Love added 10 points for the Storm (1-0). Payne, with another big performance, scored 52 points for the Bulldogs (2-1).

In the girls game, Southern won 46-15. The Storm improved to 1-0 while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3.

Courtney Griffith scored 13 points to lead Southern, followed by Charlee Slaughter and Janiya Covington with eight points each. Ava Nance had eight for Trinity.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN BOYS, CARLISLE

AXTON, Va. — Wesleyan Christian defeated Carlisle 64-48 in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday at Carlisle.

Zacch Wiggins scored 20 points to lead the Trojans (4-0), followed by Quamir Ingram with 18 points and Owen Augunas with 16 points.

WINSTON-SALEM — High Point Central posted four top-10 finishes during Tuesday's Turkey Invitational meet at JDL Fast Track.

Lindsey Shaw had a pair of ninth-place finishes — running the girls 300 meter dash in 45.73 seconds and the girls 500 meter dash in 1:27.78. Nevaeh Jackson was fifth in the girls long jump with a mark of 14-8, while Dejen Abraha was 10th in the boys 1000 meter run in 3:11.20.

THOMASVILLE — Trinity swept its matches against Oak Grove and East Davidson during Tuesday's tri-meet at East.

The Bulldogs won 51-18 against Oak Grove and 73-6 against East, while Oak Grove split its matches — winning 49-30 against East. East lost both its matches.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UNCG'S LANGLEY NAMED SOCON PLAYER OF THE WEEK

GREENSBORO — UNCG guard Keyshaun Langley was named the Southern Conference men's basketball player of the week for games Nov. 13-19.

Langley, a former Southwest Guilford standout, averaged 24.5 points and 3.5 steals per game against a pair of SEC opponents.

He had 26 points and three steals in UNCG's 74-70 loss at Vanderbilt on Nov. 14. He added a game-high 23 points, five assists and four steals in the Spartans' 78-72 win at 14th-ranked Arkansas.

Langley shot 6 for 11 (.545) from the field, including 5-for-8 (.625) from 3-point range, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.

UNCG's win over Arkansas marked the first time in school history that the Spartans defeated an SEC team and was the first time the program defeated a ranked opponent.
