Sep. 25—Around the region

— After starting the season as a reserve, freshman Jess English (Ledyard) has moved into the starting lineup the last four games for the WPI women's soccer team.

— Junior Elie Bowman (Montville) helped the WPI women's cross country team finish third at the 2023 Bates Super XC Invite in Auburn, Maine, on Sept. 17. She placed 28th overall in 20 minutes, 30.5 seconds, on the 5,000 meter course.

— At Mass Maritime Academy, junior captain Marlo Stark (Marine Science Magnet School) had 11 kills for the volleyball team in a 3-1 loss to Emmaneul on Friday.

— Sophomore Meredith Healy (East Lyme) had her New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference-leading fourth assist of the season for the Springfield women's soccer team in a 2-0 win over Clark University on Saturday.

— Sophomore Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy) helped the Stonehill women's cross country team place second in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 17. She finished 19th overall in 18:32.43.

— Junior midfielder Delaney Farinha (Norwich Free Academy) scored her first goal of the season for the Assumption women's soccer team in a 4-4 tie with No. 16 Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.

— At Central Connecticut State University, junior Victoria Violette (Bacon Academy) is playing an important defensive role for the women's soccer team. CCSU has allowed just two goals during a three-game winning streak.

— Sophomore midfielder Aimee Girard (Waterford) scored the first goal of her career for the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team in a 3-3 tie with Pace on Sept. 19.

— At Western Connecticut, junior Helen Megson (Lyman Memorial) had nine kills in the volleyball team's 3-0 sweep of Bates College on Saturday. She is second on the team with 74 kills.

— Junior midfielder Mike Milazzo (Old Lyme) scored his first goal of the season and 16th of his career for the Western New England men's soccer team in a 2-2 tie with Western Connecticut.

— Freshman running back Josiah Williams (New London) rushed for 56 yards on six carries in the UMass Dartmouth football team's 59-0 shutout of Worcester State on Saturday. Junior wide receiver Antonio Brown (Montville) had three catches for 29 yards.

— Freshman Katie Tuohy (Fitch) has appeared in six matches for the UMass Boston volleyball team.

— Endicott College sophomore Billy deCastro (Stonington) made his third start of the season and played a career-high 72 minutes in a 1-0 loss to No. 17 Middlebury last week. Sophomore midfielder Tim Lynch (Fitch) played all 90 minutes in a 3-1 win over Wheaton on Sunday.

Senior defender Angelina Venditti (East Lyme) has started all eight games for the women's soccer team. Endicott has posted six shutouts and allowed just three goals this season.

— Junior linebacker Spencer Berlepsch (NFA), freshman running back Will French (Stonington) and freshman quarterback Nathan Hynes (Waterford) are reserves on the Nichols College football team.

Junior Natalie Gray (Stonington), a starting midfielder for the women's soccer team, has a career-high and team-leading three goals through seven games. She scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Salem State on Sept. 12.

— At Dean College, junior Griffin Sullivan (Bacon Academy) is handling kickoff duties for the football team.

— Digby Ludlow (NFA) was the third best finisher for the Eastern Connecticut State University men's cross country team at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 17. He completed the 8,000 meter race in 27:21.

Camel highlights

— The Connecticut College men's soccer team is unbeaten through six games, holding a 4-0-2 record overall. The Camels have won two straight by one goal, with senior Rye Jaran delivering the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over No. 15 Babson on Saturday.

— Twelve different players have scored goals through seven games for the women's soccer team. Junior Clare Mulvihill has a team-best three for the Camels (4-3), who have 20 goals overall.

— After a bumpy start, the volleyball team is on a roll winning four straight matches to improve to 7-4 overall. Junior Katherine Randall was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week after contributing team highs of 45 kills, 55 digs and 10 aces in four victories last week.

"We are excited for Katherine in receiving this well-deserved honor," coach Josh Edmed said in a release. "Her selfless commitment to the team, her focus on the details and her fight in competitive situations allows her to excel at an elite level."

Mariners riding a wave

— The Mitchell College men's soccer team has been competitive so far in its first season in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, going 2-2-2. The Mariners begin a stretch of four straight road games on Wednesday at Dean College. Freshmen Mcwill Adu Asare and Gianmarco Delacruz have accounted for three of the team's four goals in the last three games.

— After six straight losses, the volleyball team has won two in a row, beating Albertus Magnus Wednesday and sweeping Norwich on Saturday to improve to 4-6. Sophomore Julia Lent had a career high 37 digs — the second highest total for a Mariner in Division III — against Norwich and was named GNAC Libero of the Week.

— Cross country runners Jonathan Hecker and Inonda Peterson were named GNAC Rookie of the Week for their respective teams. Hecker finished second at the Mitchell Invitational 5k race, posting a time of 17:45 while Peterson also placed second, crossing the line in 24:28.

Tracking the Bears

— Senior Sophia Galdamez and junior Shannon Shaw lead the Coast Guard Academy volleyball team in kills with 150 and 135, respectively, through 14 matches.

— The men's soccer team has either tied or had the outcome decided by a goal in all but one game this season. Senior goalie Wolfgang Pfleghar has a 1.07 goals against average in four starts for the Bears, who are 1-3-2 overall.
