Liverpool vs Burnley

Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Burnley at Anfield. The Clarets were the better side in the opening exchanges, but Liverpool scored the opener through Jota, who headed in Alexander-Arnold’s corner that Trafford couldn't deal with. O’Shea then powered in a header just before half-time, but the visitors couldn't build any momentum after the restart. Elliott came off the bench and played a vital role in the Reds’ two goals. First getting down the right side of the box, he waited for options before finding Diaz, who bundled in a header from close range. The substitute then lofted a cross from the right over to Nunez, with the striker powering a downward header past Trafford. The Clarets had opportunities earlier in the second half when they were one goal behind but lacked a clinical edge. Fofana twice went one-on-one with Kelleher. However, he crashed his first effort straight at the goalkeeper before curling his strike wide with the second. Next up, Liverpool travel to Brentford in the Premier League, with Burnley hosting Arsenal.

Robertson is over a free-kick in a wide position on the left and he curls a cross onto the head of Van Dijk. The captain has a free header, but he powers his downward effort straight at Trafford.

Liverpool vs Burnley

16:34

62 per cent of Burnley’s points in the Premier League this season have come away from home (8/13), the highest proportion in the division. However, despite this, the Clarets have won just one of their last eight league games on the road (drawing one and losing six), a 2-0 victory at Fulham in December. They have had huge chances to score their second goal.

Liverpool vs Burnley

16:33

WIDE! Liverpool are now having the better opportunities to score. Robertson's corner from the right is cleared away, but the Reds recycle possession well and it comes back to the Scotland international. Liverpool vs Burnley

16:26

HUGE CHANCE FOR BURNLEY! The Clarets won't get a better opportunity than that to level the score. Fofana makes the most of a mistake from Quansah and gets to the edge of the box. He is one-on-one with Kelleher, but the goalkeeper makes himself big to stop it. Odobert is there for the rebound, with the winger shooting well wide of the target.

Liverpool vs Burnley

16:24

OFFSIDE! Trafford makes a top save before the flag goes up for offside. Endo switches possession over to Robertson on the left, who swings a low cross into the path of Nunez. The striker is free in the middle, but his first-time effort is saved by Trafford before the flag goes up.

Liverpool vs Burnley

16:22

Liverpool vs Burnley

15:59

Liverpool were sloppy before Jota's opener and only looked like they were in control after they took the lead. The Reds have had nine shots and created a higher xG (expected goals) than Burnley (0.84 to 0.35) but haven't been convincing. However, they have been boosted by the return of Robertson at left-back, with the Scotland international constantly looking to make overlapping runs down the wing to support Diaz. As for the Clarets, they have done well and will be delighted with the half-time score. The visitors have counted well, but they must make more of the opportunities that they create. Their passing accuracy of just 65.1 per cent in the final third suggests Kompany's men must be more careful in possession.

Liverpool vs Burnley

15:56

O'Shea powered in a header just before half-time to net a deserved equaliser against Liverpool and send the teams into the tunnel with the score 1-1. The Clarets have the better chances in the opening exchanges, with Amdouni going the closest. He drove down the left with the ball, but his strike from close range was blocked by Kelleher. The Reds then took the lead with their first effort on target. Alexander-Arnold's outswinging corner wasn't dealt with by the onrushing Trafford, allowing Jota to head in for a simple opener. Diaz's first-time strike was then saved well by the Clarets' goalkeeper before the visitors levelled. Liverpool vs Burnley

15:03

It will be interesting to see if Kompany is brave enough to stick to his usual tactics, with Burnley looking to play the ball out of the back since his arrival before the start of last season. Liverpool are known for their relentless pressing and will be looking to win possession in advanced positions. Burnley are averaging 9.4 sequences of 10 or more passes in open play in the Premier League this season. It’s almost twice as many as their next highest campaign on record (since 2014-15) in the competition (4.8 per game in 2017-18).

Burnley have only won three of their 23 Premier League matches this season and are in 19th place, seven points from safety and in trouble of an immediate return to the Championship. However, the Clarets will gain encouragement from their 2-2 comeback draw against Fulham at Turf Moor, with Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana coming off the bench to net a brace on his home debut. Vincent Kompany will be hoping for a shock away win at Anfield that would break Liverpool's 23-match unbeaten streak at home in the league and could start an unlikely revival for Burnley. A triumph for the Belgian would also help Manchester City in their pursuit of the title, with the former defender spending 11 years of his playing career at the club, winning four Premier Leagues and having a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool vs Burnley

14:33

Liverpool's 15-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League ended with a disappointing 3-1 loss to fellow title challengers Arsenal in their previous match. The Reds were level at half-time after a far-from-stellar display before a defensible howler from the ever-reliable Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk gifted Gabriel Martinelli an open goal. Ibrahima Konate was then sent off, and Leandro Trossard scored a third for the Gunners in an utterly forgettable display from Jurgen Klopp's men. Liverpool's defeat handed control of the title back to Manchester City, who are beating Everton to move to the top of the league. Liverpool will return to the summit with a victory over Burnley, but they will have played one more match than the Citizens, piling the pressure on the meeting between the two giants of English football on March 10.
