Postgame recap: Turnovers thwart Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars in loss to Cleveland Browns

The big question on the minds of Jacksonville Jaguars fans: Will Trevor Lawrence play, and how effective will he be, in the Jags' trip to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday? Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Lawrence sustained a high ankle sprain during last Monday night's fourth-quarter loss, and was limited throughout the Jaguars' week. If he is unavailable to play, C.J. Beathard will take the snaps for the Jaguars.

The Browns have endured their own quarterback issues. Deshaun Watson was knocked out for the season, and since then, P.J. Walker, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and most recently Joe Flacco have lined up at QB for Cleveland.

Jaguars Report Card: Disjointed day by offense, defense, Pederson puts nobody on honor roll

Times-Union sports columnist Gene Frenette grades the Jaguars’ performance in a 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns based on execution, effort and game circumstances. - Gene Frenette

All is not lost: Jaguars still have one-game lead in AFC South, hold key tiebreakers

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost no ground in the AFC South on Sunday because all in all, it was a pretty rotten day for teams in that division.

The Jaguars had a one-game lead over the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts to when the early NFL games began, and despite their 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns, they left Cleveland with the same one-game lead. - Garry Smits

Jacksonville Jaguars can't overcome injuries, mistakes, fall 31-27 to Cleveland Browns

Far too many mistakes and far too few answers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars (8-5) couldn't work through all of the attrition against the Cleveland Browns (8-5), ultimately falling 31-27. See the key takeaways from a rough Sunday in Ohio. - Demetrius Harvey

FINAL: Cleveland 31, Jacksonville 27

The Jags fall to 8-5 but avoid losing ground in the division because of the losses by the Colts and Texans. - Clayton Freeman

Browns recover onside kick, Cleveland to drain clock

James Proche II recovers the onside kick for the Browns and that'll do it. The Jaguars are about to drop to 8-5. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Evan Engram catches Trevor Lawrence TD after pass interference flag

Not over yet. Trevor Lawrence led the Jags down the field, with a major assist from a disputed pass interference flag on Cleveland's Anthony Walker at the Browns 2. A pass to Evan Engram scored the points. Myles Garrett sacked Lawrence on a two-point try. You'll see an onside kick next.

Browns 31, Jaguars 27, 1:33 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Two-minute warning: Jaguars drive across midfield

Two minutes left and no timeouts, but Travis Etienne has moved the Jags across midfield. They need two scores. - Clayton Freeman

Field goal: Dustin Hopkins boots 56-yarder for Browns

That might do it. Dustin Hopkins, who has 30 field goals on the year, makes a 56-yarder in nasty, windy conditions. The Jags are officially in trouble in this one.

Browns 31, Jaguars 21, 3:10 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Stopped: Cameron Mitchell breaks up fourth-down pass, Browns take over on downs

The officials have let DBs play in the secondary today, and while Doug Pederson isn't happy about it, this drive is now over. The Jaguars went for fourth and 3 at their own 38, and Trevor Lawrence's pass to Zay Jones was broken up by Cameron Mitchell. The Jags felt Mitchell might've gotten there a bit early, but no flag on that one. Three and a half minutes left, Browns up 28-21, and one or two first downs could end this one. - Clayton Freeman

Rayshawn Jenkins breaks up pass, Jaguars to regain football

That ended up costing the Jaguars about two minutes, but they'll get it back. Rayshawn Jenkins, out of action twice already in the fourth quarter, came back in and swatted down Joe Flacco's pass. The Jags take over at their own 20 with 4:24 remaining, down 28-21. - Clayton Freeman

Costly offside: Adam Gotsis jumps offside on fourth down, Browns get to extend drive

That's an ouch for the Jaguars. Cleveland had been stuffed at midfield, after a false start and a Joe Flacco incompletion, and lined up to punt. The Jags would have gotten the ball back with six minutes left. But Adam Gotsis jumped offside on the punt, and the Browns converted fourth and 1. Cleveland can continued to drain the clock, up 28-21. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Parker Washington atones for miscue, makes leaping catch on Trevor Lawrence pass

That's some good wide receiver play right there from Parker Washington. The rookie, who fumbled earlier in the game, zooms into the end zone on a 19-yard pass from Trevor Lawrence and makes the diving catch. Linemen on both sides appeared to move before that snap. It's a one-score game again. The Jags lined up to go for two, but after a delay of game, Doug Pederson opted for the Brandon McManus PAT.

Browns 28, Jaguars 21, 8:52 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Browns: Blown coverage on blitz punished, David Bell scores first TD

Turnover number four leads to Cleveland points. The Jags had the Browns in fourth and 3 but Cleveland went for it, and Joe Flacco made it a big play. The quarterback anticipated the blitz and fired a strike to David Bell, and with Darious Williams on the ground after a slip, Bell dashed unchallenged to the end zone. It's getting ugly for the Jags in Cleveland.

Browns 28, Jaguars 14, 12:34 4th. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Trevor Lawrence throws pick to Browns' Greg Newsome II, fourth turnover

The turnover-fest goes on. Faced with third and inches, Trevor Lawrence goes deep to a well-covered Calvin Ridley, and it's another interception, this one for Greg Newsome II of Cleveland. Not a good risk in that situation. The Browns take over on the Jaguars' side of midfield early in the fourth quarter. - Clayton Freeman

End of third quarter: Browns 21, Jaguars 14

Fifteen minutes left in breezy Cleveland. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars make defensive stop with Josh Allen, Antonio Johnson

Defense steps up again for the Jaguars. Cleveland advanced across midfield but got turned back decisively, when Josh Allen stuffed a second-down run and Antonio Johnson broke up a third-down pass. After a punt, fielded by Parker Washington at his own 6, the Jaguars take over with poor field position and a 21-14 deficit. Just 42 seconds remain in the third quarter.. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne scores from 1 yard after Doug Pederson wins challenge

The Jags are back in the game. After the turnover, Trevor Lawrence fired a strike to Calvin Ridley inside the 5. Then, it was Travis Etienne's turn. His run from the 1 was ruled short, but Doug Pederson challenged and won. That's a touchdown.

Browns 21, Jaguars 14, 4:59 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Fumble: Antonio Johnson strip-sacks Joe Flacco, Jeremiah Ledbetter recovers for Jaguars

A highlight for rookie Antonio Johnson. The rookie flies in on the blitz and whacks Joe Flacco, jarring the ball loose. Defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter falls on the football at the Cleveland 25. It's a crucial opportunity for the Jaguars as they take over with a 21-7 deficit, 7:26 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars go three-and-out, again, after Trevor Lawrence is sacked

A dismal day continues for the Jacksonville offense. Another three-and-out for the Jags, including a sack that left them in third and 20. A short pass to D'Ernest Johnson wasn't enough to convert. Browns 21, Jaguars 7, 7:38 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Browns: Cleveland punishes Jaguars miscue, Kareem Hunt scores from Wildcat set

This time, the Browns punish the turnover. It took a fourth-down sneak from their fourth quarterback, Joe Flacco, to keep the football moving. Kareem Hunt then found the end zone on a 5-yard Wildcat run.

Browns 21, Jaguars 7, 9:39 3rd. - Clayton Freeman

Fumble: Parker Washington stripped by Browns' Anthony Walker, Cleveland recovers

That's turnover number three. Already in third and 21, the Jaguars lost the football when Parker Washington was stripped of the ball. The Browns begin the second half deep in Jacksonville territory with a chance to end their 14-7 lead. - Clayton Freeman

Second half kicks off: Jaguars receive third-quarter kickoff

The Jaguars receive the football, trailing 14-7. Can they make a comeback in Cleveland? - Clayton Freeman

HALFTIME: Browns 14, Jaguars 7

That's halftime. A lot to work on at the break for the Jags, after a 1-hour, 47-minute first half. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars go three-and-out with three incompletions, 13 seconds elapsed

Not impressive from the Jacksonville O. The non-drive lasts 13 seconds and almost ends in an interception. It's another punt, and Cleveland gets the football back with a 14-7 lead and 47 seconds until halftime. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' defense stops Browns, Jags to regain possession

It's far from a perfect first half for the Jaguars' defense, but they've mostly done well enough at covering receivers other than David Njoku. After a punt, the Jags get the ball back with 1:07 before halftime. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Martin Emerson Jr. picks off Trevor Lawrence for second time

Another miscue, this one in the red zone. After a great Evan Engram catch along the sideline, Trevor Lawrence threw a pass to diving Cleveland cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. toward the left of the formation. That one was intended for Calvin Ridley, who didn't appear to be expecting the football. A big opportunity slips away. Browns still lead 14-7, 1:47 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Flags derail Cleveland drive, Jaguars to get ball back before halftime

Twice, the Browns thought they had first downs on that drive. But an illegal formation nullified one of them, and a holding call brought back another. Parker Washington returned the Browns' punt to near midfield, and it's good field position as the Jaguars try to tie the score. Cleveland leads 14-7 with 4:01 before the break. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Jaguars: Evan Engram catches Trevor Lawrence TD pass after takeaway

Evan Engram has started nicely today and now he's got a touchdown. Engram got behind Grant Delpit and grabbed a 10-yard strike from Trevor Lawrence. The Jags needed that.

Browns 14, Jaguars 7, 6:14 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Fumble: Browns' Amari Cooper loses ball after Andrew Wingard strip, Devin Lloyd recovers

Big play for the Jags on D. Amari Cooper caught a pass to get the Browns out of nightmare field position, but Andrew Wingard stripped it away from behind and Devin Lloyd recovered. The Jaguars' linebacker returned the ball to the Cleveland 12. The Jaguars trail 14-0 with under 7 minutes to go in the quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Grant Delpit sacks Trevor Lawrence, pushes Jaguars out of field goal range.

That was painful, in more ways than one. Travis Etienne and D'Ernest Johnson helped move the ball across midfield for the Jaguars. But on third and 4 from the 32, Trevor Lawrence got swarmed by the Browns' safety blitz and Grant Delpit downed the QB for a huge loss. Lawrence quickly rose to his feet, a good thing after the low contact, but the sack bumped the Jaguars out of field goal range. Logan Cooke's punt takes the Browns inside their own 10 with 7:03 left in the 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Darious Williams makes the pick for Jaguars

The Jaguars really needed that. With the offense in slump mode and the defense struggling, Darious Williams makes the interception. Joe Flacco's pass went directly to him. Looked like a receiver got caught up in traffic. The Jags take over at their own 42, trailing 14-0 with about 11 minutes until halftime. - Clayton Freeman

Interception: Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. picks off Trevor Lawrence on deep ball

It's getting worse for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence goes deep for Zay Jones, but the ball sails way beyond the receiver into the hands of Martin Emerson Jr. for a pick. Looked like a possible miscommunication between QB and receiver on that route. The Browns get the football back with a two-touchdown lead, 13:27 2nd. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Browns: David Njoku breaks loose again, catches Joe Flacco TD pass

The Jaguars just can't deal with David Njoku today. Joe Flacco first led the Browns across midfield and then found the tight end with a short pass, and Njoku broke an Andre Cisco tackle on his way to a 30-yard touchdown. Trouble early for the Jags in Ohio.

Browns 14, Jaguars 0, 13:40 2nd.

End of first quarter: Browns 7, Jaguars 0

The Jags have work to do in the second period. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' drive stalls out after Browns get away with apparent hold

So close. On first and 5, Trevor Lawrence looked deep for Zay Jones, who was pulled back by a Browns defender and nearly reached the ball anyway. No penalty occurred on the play, and that ended up costly for the Jags. Two more passes missed, and the Jaguars punted. Cleveland takes over with a 7-0 lead and 0:05 left in the quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Joe Flacco off target, Browns go three-and-out again

Neither offense is exactly the proverbial well-oiled machine right now. Cleveland went three-and-out with Joe Flacco missing out of bounds for Amari Cooper on second down and throwing too high on third down. An illegal block in the back backs up the Jaguars on the punt return. Cleveland leads 7-0, 1:56 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars' offense goes three-and-out again, including drop

Not much going on for the Jaguars on offense. Two short passes and an incompletion off a drop during a brief possession. That means a punt. Cleveland still leads 7-0, 2:55 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Browns go three-and-out, Jaguars to take over inside own 20 after mammoth Corey Bojorquez punt

Since that blown coverage on the touchdown, the Jaguars have fared better on defense, flustering Joe Flacco on that possession and forcing a three-and-out. But it doesn't translate to winning field position. Corey Bojorquez uncorked a 70-yard punt, pinning the Jaguars inside their own 20. Cleveland leads 7-0, 4:20 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Martin Emerson Jr. breaks up Jaguars pass for Zay Jones, forces punt

Much more life from the Jaguars' offense on that drive, including a completion to Calvin Ridley. But it ended on third down. Trevor Lawrence went deep for Zay Jones, but Cleveland cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. broke up the pass. A false start by Ezra Cleveland derailed that Jags drive near midfield. After a punt, it's Cleveland football. The Browns lead 7-0 with 5:32 left in the first quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Josh Allen makes stop for Jaguars defense on third down

The Jags needed a quick improvement on defense and they got one. Cleveland had third-and-short but Josh Allen led a pack of Jaguars to the ball to deny David Njoku. Jacksonville takes over inside its own 20 after the punt. The Browns lead 7-0 with 7:48 left in the first quarter. - Clayton Freeman

Jaguars begin with three-and-out, Trevor Lawrence sacked

The Jaguars' offense isn't going anywhere early, either. It's a three-and-out, including a Travis Etienne rush straight into the line for no yardage and a third-down sack for Trevor Lawrence. Fortunately for the Jags, Lawrence doesn't appear injured after the hit; less fortunately, it results in a punt. Cleveland leads 7-0, 9:18 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Touchdown Browns: Jaguars blow coverage, Joe Flacco finds David Njoku for easy touchdown

A nightmare start for the Jaguars' defense. On third down, the Jags experienced a full-scale coverage bust, allowing tight end David Njoku behind the defense with no Jaguars in his ZIP code. Joe Flacco didn't make any mistake on that one, and the fourth starting quarterback for Cleveland this year delivered a 34-yard pass over the top.

Browns 7, Jaguars 0, 11:39 1st. - Clayton Freeman

Ready for kickoff: Jaguars win toss and defer

It'll be Cleveland football first. The Jaguars begin on defense. - Clayton Freeman

Gene Frenette: Doug Pederson's acumen in battling adversity should be comforting to Jaguars

There was a legitimate sense of trepidation Monday night as the double gut punch of losing to the Cincinnati Bengals and a slew of injuries hit the Jacksonville Jaguars, none bigger than seeing Trevor Lawrence barely able to walk toward the locker room.

Adversity is piling up along with the Jaguars’ medical issues. It’s a testy time during a December playoff push, all while trying to hang on to a one-game AFC South division lead.

The M.A.S.H. unit circumstances are an unfortunate downside of NFL life, but it’s especially jarring when it happens at critical positions. - Gene Frenette

QBs drop like flies: Only half of all NFL teams have had starter all season

There’s a reason why NFL quarterbacks get paid so much.

It’s not only a hard job. It’s really dangerous.

For the entire 2022 season, only 10 quarterbacks started all 17 games.

That list included: Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Geno Smith, Jared Goff, Trevor Lawrence and Kirk Cousins.

So far through 12 games (Washington and Arizona have played 13), only 18 of 32 teams have had the same signal caller start every game. - Tim Walters

Dawuane Smoot has been a man for any year during his seven seasons with the Jaguars

Dawuane Smoot knew his wife Aumari was up to something during a Jaguars' off day on Nov. 28.

"I knew she was trying to keep something from me the whole time," said the Jacksonville Jaguars' seventh-year outside linebacker following the team's practice on Wednesday at the Miller Electric Center. "She definitely knew. She kept asking random questions that she usually doesn't ask. So I had a feeling something was coming up but I didn't know what." - Garry Smits

Gene Frenette: Jaguars' defense better bring some physicality along to gloomy Cleveland

Josh Allen never used the word “soft,” but his evaluation of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense after reviewing tape of the 34-31 overtime loss Monday to the Cincinnati Bengals clearly insinuated he had questions about the unit’s toughness.

It was a spot-on assessment. The Jaguars were shoddy in every respect on defense, none more so than allowing the NFL’s worst rushing attack to gash them for 156 yards on the ground. It was the most rushing yards and total yards (491) Jacksonville allowed all season. - Gene Frenette

Week 14 staff predictions: Jacksonville Jaguars at Cleveland Browns

This week, the Jaguars face the Cleveland Browns, who are on their fourth quarterback in veteran Joe Flacco. The Browns currently own one of the seven AFC playoff spots.

It's not jinxing it: Jaguars, other playoff contenders will put post-season tickets on sale

Jacksonville Jaguars playoff tickets go on sale next week.

Before the more superstitious Jags fans gasp and reach for their rabbit’s foot (“don’t jinx it!”), it’s NFL policy that teams leading their divisions in December put tickets on sale in advance of potential playoff games at home. Here's how to get them. - Garry Smits
