Lions trade DT Spence to Dolphins

The Detroit Lions traded defensive tackle Akeem Spence to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed 2019 draft pick, both teams announced Thursday.

According to ESPN, the pick Miami traded is a conditional seventh-rounder acquired from the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason in exchange for wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Earlier Thursday, ESPN reported the Lions renegotiated Spence's contract, cutting his 2018 salary from $3.15 million to $2.575 million. His contract also includes a non-guaranteed $2.5 million in 2019.

Spence, 26, joined Detroit on a three-year, $9 million deal in free agency last spring and made three sacks and 39 tackles in 16 games (11 starts) in 2017. A fourth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013, Spence had 5.5 sacks and 96 tackles in 56 games (30 starts) across four seasons with the Bucs.

Miami released defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh earlier this offseason and had not brought in another player at the position, either via free agency or the draft, this offseason until Thursday's trade.

The Dolphins also have 2015 second-round pick Jordan Phillips and 2017 draft picks Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor, who went in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.
