Linesman leaves on stretcher after hit to head, gives thumbs up

Linesman Steve Barton was taken off the ice on a stretcher after hitting his head on the ice after a scary collision with Oilers star Connor McDavid in Edmonton's home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday night at Rogers Place.

The play happened with 16:09 left in the first period after Oilers when McDavid finished a hit on Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. McDavid fell to the ice along the boards after the play and slid along the surface into Barton's skates, tripping the linesman and causing play to stop for several minutes.

Although Barton was seemingly able to move his fingers and feet as he was initially being treated, a trainer summoned for a stretcher. Barton had his neck immobilized, and as he left the ice, he gave a thumbs up to the Edmonton crowd.

According to SportsNet, Barton was able to move his extremities while en route to a hospital.
