Las Vegas Raiders sign Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller to 3-year, $51 million extension

The Las Vegas Raiders have arguably the NFL’s best wide receiver and tight end under contract through the next few years.

The Raiders inked tight end Darren Waller to a three-year contract extension on the eve of the team’s Week 1 opener versus the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced on Saturday morning. Waller signed a three-year deal worth $51 million, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Waller ranks third in franchise history among tight ends with 3,081 receiving yards. His 14 touchdown receptions rank sixth. The 2020 Pro Bowl selection was originally a sixth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2015 NFL draft. He signed with the Raiders in 2018. He has registered 270 catches, 3,184 yards and 16 touchdowns in his career.

“Darren Waller is an exemplary teammate in every way, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow as a leader on this team,” Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels said in a statement. “Darren brings a tremendous commitment and work ethic to the building every day and we couldn’t be more thrilled that he will be a part of the Raiders Family for years to come.”

Waller is now contractually tied to the Raiders for the next five years. In March, the Raiders acquired star wideout Davante Adams in a trade with the Green Bay Packers and signed the receiver to a five-year, $141.25 million contract.

Waller and Adams give Las Vegas two of the most explosive offensive players in the NFL at their disposal.
