Killingly's Manzi named athlete of the week; vote now in new poll

Killingly’s Landon Manzi has been voted The Bulletin “Athlete of the Week” for the fourth week of the spring season. Manzi, a junior pitcher, tossed a complete game three-hitter to lift Killingly to a 12-0 baseball win over Plainfield. Manzi struck out nine and walked none.

Manzi also earned the win in Killingly’s 10-3 victory over New London. He allowed just two hits, no earned runs, and struck out six over five innings.

Last week saw plenty of standout performances in softball, boys volleyball, and boys and girls track and field across Eastern Connecticut. While there's no shortage of talent, we went and found the best of the best.

Here are the nominees:

Laurissa Gedney, Plainfield

The Panthers sophomore went 4-for-4 with two doubles and seven RBIs in a 16-4 non-league win over Ellis Tech.

Gage Hinkley, Norwich Free Academy

The Wildcats senior hitter powered NFA to three straight sweeps this week. Hinkley had 10 kills in a win over HMCTA. He collected 12 kills and 13 digs against Woodstock Academy. And added six kills and six aces against Academy of Aerospace & Engineering as NFA improved to 11-1.

Abby Matheson, Griswold

The Wolverines junior pitcher won three games in three days against Montville, Ledyard and Plainfield.   Against Montville, Matheson struckout 11, including two of the last three batters, and walked only three.

The following day she struck out eight over 10 innings and knocked in the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th in a thrilling 6-5 win against Ledyard.

Matheson combined with Madison Labrecque to throw a five-hitter while striking out nine in a 9-5 win over Plainfield. Matheson also added three hits and two RBIs against the Panthers.

Madison Pudvah, Griswold

The Wolverines sophomore won both the discus (70-2) and the javelin (82-2) in a meet against Wheeler and Montville. Griswold defeated Wheeler, 89-42, but fell to Montville, 107-38.

Hailey Smith, Norwich Free Academy

The Wildcats senior pitcher lifted NFA to impressive wins over Waterford and Glastonbury. Smith allowed just two earned runs while striking out six in a 7-2 victory against Waterford.

Smith allowed just one run with four strikeouts in NFA’s 2-1 win over Glastonbury.

Jeremiah Smith, Killingly

Killingly sophomore remained unbeaten in every event this season by winning the high jump, long lump, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in a meet against Plainfield.
