Kentucky Derby 2024 winner Mystik Dan was trained at Marion County center

The winner of the 2024 Kentucky Derby has a Marion County connection, according to the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association.

Mystik Dan, which won by a nose, was "trained by conditioner Ken McPeek at his Silverleaf Hills Training Center in Summerfield," according to the FTBOA. The horse went off at 18-1 odds.

Second place went to Sierra Leone, which also has a local connection. The horse received early race training "from David Scanlon’s Scanlon Training and Sales based at Reid Nagel’s Oak Ridge Training Center in Morriston," according to the FTBOA.

Morriston is just west of Marion County in Levy County. The horse was one of the favorites as the race began.
