Kansas football vs. Oklahoma recap: Jayhawks deliver Big 12 Conference upset

LAWRENCE — Kansas football’s 2023 season continued Saturday with a Big 12 Conference game at home against Oklahoma.

The Jayhawks came in off of an open week. The No. 6 Sooners came in off of a win at home against UCF. Last year, Oklahoma beat Kansas in Norman.

Was Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold's squad able to pull off the upset? Were the Sooners able to keep working their way toward the College Football Playoff? It was Homecoming in Lawrence.

Kansas responds with a touchdown

The Jayhawks have the lead with 0:55 left in the fourth quarter. Running back Devin Neal scored on a run from nine yards out. Kansas leads 38-33, after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Oklahoma takes a late lead

The Sooners lead 33-32 with 5:22 left in the fourth quarter after a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Dillon Gabriel and a failed two-point conversion. The drive took 1:23 off of the clock and went 14 yards in four plays. It was set up by an interception thrown by the Jayhawks.

Kansas drives for a touchdown

The Jayhawks have the lead again with 12:25 left in the fourth quarter after a one-yard touchdown run by running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. The two-point conversion attempt didn't work, so it's a 32-27 game. The drive took 3:03 off of the clock and went 65 yards in seven plays.

END 3Q: Oklahoma 27, Kansas 26

Oklahoma takes the lead back

The Sooners are up 27-26 now with 0:35 left in the third quarter, after a three-yard rushing score from running back Gavin Sawchuk. The two-point conversion attempt didn't work. The drive went 75 yards in seven plays and took 2:28 off of the clock.

Kansas takes the lead

The Jayhawks scored on a 38-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Jason Bean with 3:03 left in the third quarter, and after not getting the two-point conversion lead 26-21. The drive went 38 yards in one play and lasted eight seconds. It started after Kansas forced a fumble defensively and recovered it.

Kansas draws closer with another field goal

The Jayhawks scored again, this time on a 29-yard field goal by kicker Seth Keller with 4:03 left in the third quarter. They're trailing 21-20 now. The drive took 2:45 off of the clock and went 45 yards in five plays.

HALFTIME: Oklahoma 21, Kansas 17

Kansas connects on a field goal

Kansas cut into Oklahoma's lead with a 24-yard field goal from kicker Seth Keller with 0:50 left in the second quarter. The drive took 12 plays and went 79 yards in 3:28. The score is now 21-17, Sooners leading.

Oklahoma leads

After Kansas fumbled the ball away on a kickoff return, Oklahoma drove for a touchdown and took the lead. After the extra point, the Sooners lead 21-14 with 4:25 left in the second quarter. The drive went 17 yards in four plays and took 1:38 off of the clock, with the scoring play a nine-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Oklahoma ties the score

After a weather delay due to lightning, Oklahoma finished its drive with a two-yard touchdown run by running back Tawee Walker. The drive took 3:11 off of the clock and went 66 yards in nine plays. After the extra point, it's a 14-14 game with 6:05 left before halftime.

Oklahoma scores its first points

The Sooners have found the end zone now, with quarterback Dillon Gabriel scoring on a seven-yard scamper with 10:15 left in the second quarter. The drive took 3:54 off of the clock and went 75 yards in 10 plays. After the extra point the Jayhawks still lead, but it's 14-7 now.

Kansas extends its lead

The Jayhawks are up 14-0 now with 14:09 left in the second quarter after a touchdown drive and the ensuing extra point. Running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. scored on a nine-yard touchdown run. The drive lasted 10 plays and 79 yards and took 5:20 off of the clock.

END 1Q: Kansas 7, Oklahoma 0

Kansas returns an interception for a touchdown

Although the Jayhawks' first drive on offense ended with a failed fourth-down conversion in Sooners territory, Kansas was still the first team to score. Cornerback Mello Dotson picked off a pass and returned the interception 37 yards for a touchdown. After the extra point, the Jayhawks lead 7-0 with 9:25 left in the first quarter.
