Joey Bosa notches most sacks ever to start career

It wasn’t that long ago that football minds wondered whether then-San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa would end up being an expensive bust. Nobody’s wondering that anymore.

Bosa sacked Tom Brady midway through the now-Los Angeles Chargers’ game against the New England Patriots, marking Bosa’s 19th career sack. That’s the most by any player in his first 20 games in NFL history.*

(*-The caveat here is that the NFL began tracking the sack stat in 1982, so there were plenty of old-school sacks that went untracked. But it’s still safe to say Bosa is very, very good.)

The Chargers sacked Brady three times Sunday, albeit in a 21-13 defeat on the road.

Bosa is one of the few highlights of an otherwise lackluster Chargers season. The all-time sacks leader remains Bruce Smith, who had 200 over a 19-year, 279-game career. If Bosa continues his current 0.95-sacks-per-game rate, he’d pass Smith sometime in the 2028 season. Not that we’re projecting forward too much or anything.
