Jocelyn Schiller becomes Red River's first Miss Basketball winner

Mar. 22—GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Red River senior Jocelyn Schiller had a dominant high school basketball career.

Even in the voting for North Dakota Miss Basketball, Schiller was dominant.

Schiller received 21 of 24 first-place votes en route to North Dakota's Miss Basketball honors, an award announced Friday by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

In an award that dates back to 1985, Schiller is the first athlete from Red River to win either the Miss Basketball or Mr. Basketball award.

The last Grand Forks honoree was Central post Caitlin Farroh in 2011.

Schiller received 114 points in the voting structure, beating out Watford City's Jessica Mogen, who was runner-up with 34 points and two first-place votes. Other Miss Basketball finalists include Ashton Safranski of Fargo Davies, Rylee Satrom of May-Port-C-G, Maya Vibeto of Our Redeemer's and Mataeya Mathern of Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier.

Mathern and Schiller are both UND commitments.

Schiller averaged 28.2 points per game and finished her career as the No. 2 all-time scorer in the state's highest division.

Schiller scored 2,344 career points, ending just 27 points shy of all-time leading scorer Sarah Jacobson of Fargo Shanley.

Schiller averaged 6.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 5.1 steals per game.

After winning a state championship last season, the Riders finished third at the state tournament this year after losing in the state semifinals to eventual champion Fargo Davies.

Schiller scored a tournament-record 105 total points this year. Her 45 points in the semifinal loss to Davies was a state semifinal record. Her 17 made field goals tied a single-game record.

Schiller's 45-point effort broke her own school single-game scoring record of 43 points set last season.

This season was a second-straight year of impressive state tournaments for Schiller, who scored a tournament championship game record 34 points last season in a win over Bismarck Century. She was named tournament MVP.

Schiller, who was named the Herald's 2023 Sportsperson of the year, has also won state championships in cross country and track and field.
